Canyoning
After my near death experience L-R; a random Australian, Judy, another random Australian, Lynette, Andy, a very relieved Jon Peache, Billy, Steve, Ross This morning we were up relatively early for all of us bar Kasia to go canyoning. Canyoning is basically a way of getting from the top of a river to the bottom in an extreme fashion, so much abseiling, zip lining and unnecessary jumping ensued.
With one slight problem. I have no sense of balance as some of you well know. So on the first abseiling bit, I slipped and fell after about 2 steps. I managed to get back up, before slipping and falling to the side, too close to the edge and a 30 foot drop for my liking. I lay there for a bit, crapping my pants whilst the guide shouted obsceneties at me in Spanish and told me to put my hands on the rope. My hands were on the rope, but apparently in the wrong place, and I was supposed to guess where exactly they had to go.
After what felt like about an hour, I scrabbled my way down to the platform, and fearing further Hispanic abuse, jumped on the zipline to get away from the crazy Ecuadorian.
Once that mishap was out of the way (and after I'd stopped shaking like
canyoning 2
A slightly more successful attempt at abseiling a big girl), I was OK, and actually quite enjoyed the final 2 abseils - they were on a vertical surface so much easier.
In the afternoon, we had a trip into Baños to buy the rest of Judy's presents (including a really cool piñata) before heading back, where she cooked us all my first roast dinner for about 3 months. Not a patch on mum's but very good nonetheless.
