Cholesterol anyone?
Laz loving his diet.... Tues 30th Oct:
We stopped at Maryborough on way, finding a physio to buy some theraband from and a chemist to get a calf support. Once stuck back together, down to Hervey Bay to sort out our Fraser trip. We were originally going to do 3day/2night but couldn't do that till Sunday so went for 2day/1night leaving on Thurs.
Now booked we booked into YHA, a lovely scenic place and chilled out for the evening.
Weds 31st Oct:
Woke at 0530 so went for an early morning swim. There was an Olympic size swimming pool not far up the road so a only a short drive. 2000m later and feeling much more refreshed then spent the rest of the morning writing up my travel log. Grabbed a quick roll for luch then drove the short distance to Torquay for the internet. Laz dined on the largest bacon/egg/cheese burger and chips, just check out the pic! The internet was stupidly slow so after a quick food shop went pack to hostel and then queued for the internet there, grrrr!
2hrs later and my blog was looking pretty good if I do say so myself. In fact, I have to say it
Fraser Island
From the ferry myself because no one else makes any comments (HINT HINT!!!)
With the excitement of Fraser looming, ate, drank and off to bed.
Thurs 1st Nov:
Woken ridiculously early, 0500 by people next door. With the walls being made of paper (and not the sound proof type) their conversation carried through! We had to be ready for collection at 0800 so got up to get things sorted. Packed small rucksack to take to Fraser, packed everything else into big rucksack which then got locked away in their store for safe keeping. Took advantage of the free hostel breakfast and got collected at 0800. We were travelling in a 4WD bus with 23 onboard.
A short ferry ride from Urangan Boat Harbour and straight into driving through the sand, over a foot deep. It was really bumpy and rocking all over the place, I was getting worried that I wouldn't be able to stomach it but thankfully my stomach became hardcore!
Richo, our guide/driver was a walking encyclopedia when it came to Fraser Island. Our 1st stop was in the rainforest. It was great to get some fresh air in the shade and strech our legs. We met Richo a bit
The Rainforest
Nice to get some shade further down the track where he'd found funnel web spider, only one of the most poisonous in Oz! He then proceeded to prod it with a stick to get it in attack mode for us to take photos!!! Funnily enough, I zoomed in rather than getting any closer!!
Next stop, Eli Creek. We waded through the very warm water up the creek but not much to photo.
Then onto Maheno Shipwreck, also known as the mini Titanic. There's a big historical story to go with this ship but you're lucky cos I'm not going to bore you with it! Next stop, Coloured Sand, for obvious reasons..... and finally Indian Head. we walked upto the point and the scenery just blows you away! Not literally else I would have fallen 100s of feet, but you know what I mean! We were so lucky, whilst there we saw a pod of dolphins, a humpback whale, 2 eagle rays and a shark (small 1).
Then headed further north to Champagne Pools, a naturally formed pool in the rocks filled with sea water, where some went to cool off.
Off to the campsite at Cathedral Beach. Grabbed a shower whilst Richo was preparing our
Funnel web spider
Thats close enough for me! dinner. Had some lovely fish in garlic butter and my first taste of kangaroo (which didn't taste of chicken!)
After the meal 15 of us grabbed as many torches as we could and walked down to the beach, only a 5 min walk. Safety in numbers as there were plenty of dingoes about. Once on the beach 1 lay down on the sand, we switched off all the torches and just had the most amazing sight above, stars everywhere and so bright. They were even lighting up the waves as they broke onot shore. This will no doubt be one of my best memories of my travels.
Fri 2nd Nov:
Early start, up for breakfast at 0630 and if you're not up, Richo walks around banging together 2 bin lids! we aimed to leave at 0800 but the battery was flat so we had a slight delay. Once it was up and running we had to head back to Eurong for more diesel so we jumped out on the beach and went for a walk, being careful when we crossed the auto-bahn (motorway/beach)!
Then onto Lake Wabby. This involved a real trek across the dessert like sandblow. It was
exceedingly hot but so worth it to be able to dive into a frshwater lake at the end. we then took the forest path back to the bus. Next stop, picnic lunch at Central Station. Chickem fajitas with all the trimmings, doesn't get better than that (just missing the fried onions)! Our final stop before the ferry, Lake Birrabeen, a shorter walk and a much flatter beach. After 30mins of cooling off it was back to the bus. We were so lucky that not 5mins from the ferry we saw a dingo, our wildlife watch complete!
The ferry took us back to River Heads then a short drive back to Hervey Bay. we had to drop some back at the Kingfisher Resort so took the opportunity to take a group photo. It was such a great mix of people on this trip and I had the best time.
Having made friends with Jess and Brett, from Colorado, we arranged to have dinner with them later that night. They were on holiday for 3wks and as they were being paid whilst there, refused to let us pay for our meal, a really kind gesture. A few more drinks back at their
hostel and then time to head home, such an amazing couple of days!
