Did someone say fish?
Me feeding Patch, what an experience Mon 29th Oct:
With our trip to Fraser Island leaving from Rainbow Beach, it was time to leave the luxury of our town house for Rainbow Beach. On arriving, we tried to book into Pippie's Hostel but it was really busy. They thought they could fit us in but needed to ask some guests if they'd mind upgrading so suggested coming back in an hr. Not aproblem but Rainbow Beach is the smallest hamlet ever!
We drove down to the beach for lunch but the weather was grey and windy so decided to head back to library to use the internet. Whilst in there a massive storm rolled in and it started pouring with rain, not a good sign for Fraser tomorrow. On checking the forecast it confirmed our worries so we postponed our trip till Friday. After this we realised that we would really be wasting time waiting till then as there was nothing to do in Rainbow so we decided Hervey Bay (further North) would be better for our trip as it was a few days away and we wouldn't be wasting time.
The afternoon was fast passing and the rain wasn't so we drove around the bay to
Tin Can Bay. It was dark when we got there which makes searching for accommodation much more fun!!! We stopped at a campsite a booked into a cabin for the night. I drew the short straw, Laz getting the dble bed and me the triple bunk bed. With it still raining there wasn't much to do except eat and watch tv. I braved it for a while and took a trek to the payphone and arrived back 2hrs later. Laz was almost worried about me but he knows I can can talk and it was still raining so he kept his worrying inside the cabin!
Went to bed but just could not sleep. The bunks were in the smallest space so after an hour I felt sooo claustraphobic. After 6hrs of lying in my coffin I'd had enough. Only constructive thing from this night, I decided I definitely want to be cremated!! Enough said!
Tues 30th Oct:
Was obviously up nice and early and we needed to be down at the bay by 0730. Left just before 7 to go for a run and arranged to see Laz down at the bay. Off I trotted at a nice comfortable
pace, 10 mins in the opposite direction to the bay before I turned around. 30 secs into the turn around and my left calf muscle (yes, the "good leg") pulls. Felling very owwey I try and walk it off but it wasn't happening. With time ticking on, I grit my teeth a start running. Thought I was in luck when I was metres away from the campsite entrance and Laz pulls out in the car. I say thought because Laz missed me shouting and waving my arms at him and drove off without me. As you can imagine, I was not pleased (putting it politely as this is a family show). Needing to get down to the bay I had no choice to run, less painful than walking. Got down there at 0735 to see 2 wild dolphins in the bay, the reason for needing to get down there. They're endo pacific humpback dolphins, related to orcas. I threw of my trainers and walked into the water, the dolphins being about a metre away, it was awesome. At 0800 they actually feed the dolphins so we queue for a fish then just wade into the water and hold the fish out. I fed Mystic 1st and as there were only about 30 people down there we got to get another fish so I also fed Patch. Such an amazing experience.
Back to the cabin to pack up and with much improved weather, head up to Hervey Bay.
We stopped at Maryborough on way, finding a physio to buy so theraband from and a chemist to get a calf support. Once stuck back together, down to Hervey Bay to sort out our Fraser trip. We were originally going to do 3day/2night but couldn't do that till Sunday so went for 2day/1night leaving on Thurs.
Now booked we booked into YHA, a lovely scenic place and chilled out for the evening.
Weds 31st Oct:
Woke at 0530 so went for an early morning swim. There was an Olympic size swimming pool not far up the road so a only a short drive. 2000m later and feeling much more refreshed then spent the rest of the morning writing up my travel log. Grabbed a quick roll for luch then drove the short distance to Torquay for the internet. Laz dined on the largest bacon/egg/cheese burger and chips, just check out the pic! The internet was stupidly slow so after a quick food shop went pack to hostel and then queued for the internet there, grrrr!
2hrs later and my blog was looking pretty good if I do say so myself. In fact, I have to say it myself because no one else makes any comments (HINT HINT!!!)
With the excitement of Fraser looming, ate, drank and off to bed.
