The team leaders were allowed to tell their teams at noon today where we are going on our first project. They had to tell us within 24hrs of noon on Friday where we were going. My team leader dragged it out as long as he could, to torture us, before he would tell us where we are going. He thought it was fun that he knew where we were going and nobody else did. BOYS! :-p
So… for my first project I will be going to ….Drum roll please…
Biloxi Mississippi!!! (The home of Lance Bass) YAY! I’m super excited. I don’t know too many details yet as he told us at 5pm and our weekend started at 5:15pm.
What I do know now is:
*We are working with Habitat for Humanity mainly doing interior work on houses, it will start with dry wall in the first couple weeks then we will do framing, painting, floors and lots of other fun stuff that I really have no idea how to do.
*While there, my team will be staying in a Lutheran Church and become staff members of the church, I am not sure what that entails. There is
1 shower inside the church for the 13 of us.
*AmeriCorps has strict driving rules, so it will take us up to 8 days to get there in the 15 passenger van. (We are only allowed to drive 8hrs a day; we have to stop every 2 hours to change drivers and can’t drive above 65mph.)
*We are not sure if we will get a cargo van to take with us, so it is possible that we will have 13 people and 13 people’s luggage in one 15 passenger van, that is not too exciting, but the road trip across the country is very exciting!
*Biloxi is 2 hours away from New Orleans.
*Biloxi is the Atlantic City of the South.
*There are approx. 6-9 AmeriCorps Teams which will be within an hour radius of us when we are down there (many more in New Orleans).
I am so excited to finally know where I am going and what I will be doing for my first project (and this is only 1 out of 4 projects that I will partake in during my service). My team is awesome, granted we haven’t had to spend 24hrs a day with
Sandra and I
notice how the sun is not yet up. each other yet for 9 months, but we have been spending 8hours a day together for a week and a half and we all seem to get along great. They are becoming my family away from home. I am having such a great time here.
The days have been very long as we have been waking up at 5am to do Physical Training. AHH! I feel as though half of my day is done by 8am but its only 8am. We have trainings until 5pm and I am in bed before 10pm every night. The weather here is still pretty nice.
I talked to Sandra briefly today about her project and for those who are curious she is staying in California. However, she will move from Sacramento to Palm Springs. In the mornings she will be trail building? and in the afternoons she will be tutoring kids? (It was a 2minute conversation that we had so I might have some of her details wrong… but she is very excited about her assignment as well.)
Love and Miss ya,
Nicki

The wait is over
Hi Nicki, This is very exciting and I'm sure you're glad the wait is over. You'll get to experience another part of the country that you haven't seen before. This is so cool, that you'll be able to do all those construction things when you come home, that Mom is always wanting me to do. Study hard. We miss you and continue to pray for your (and Gold 4) well being. Love ya, Pops
