We liked Rio but Rio didn´t like us much. We arrived to torrential rain which had caused a landslide blocking one of the main roads and causing many, many traffic jams. Our first challenge was getting from the airport to the hostel. There was a 2 hour queue for buses and the taxis were refusing to take us as the roads were so jammed. We eventually got to our hostel in Ipanema and went to see the beautiful rio beaches and mountains, but the visibility was so bad we could only see clouds and mist and lots of rain. During the rain we did some hopeful bikini shopping, visited the modern art gallery, got v wet and warmed ourselves up with some of the local speciality - caipirinia coctails - lime, sugar and lots of rum! After 2 days of non-stop rain the sun came out and there were indeed beautiful beaches and mountains. However, our travelling curse (Krakow, fog, car crashes etc) continued and our trip to see the Christ the Redeemer statue and sugar loaf mountain were foiled by the blocked road and a shooting which closed the route. We decided to try Rio again later.
