okay, so i've had a pretty rough week. the gummage under my fake tooth is infected, and i've had to manage the pain with almost nothing besides ibuprofen. let me tell you, that was pretty much completely ineffectual. i spent one night completely awake, crying on the stupid couch i have to sleep on. i called my grandma, but as you might imagine, she wasn't much help, being thousands of miles away and all. i had to walk to school to get somebody to set up an appointment for me the next day, but they said i coudln't get an appointment till i had been taking antibiotics for at least 24 hours. that would have been okay, but they didn't give me any painkillers to take with these antibiotics. so, i was super super miserable all day and wanted to go home and burn italy to the ground as i left. fortunately, one of my friends had some real painkillers that her dentist had given her for a similar problem, so i took one of those and felt MUCH better and actually got to sleep for awhile. i went to the dentist yesterday, which wasn't so bad, since i had this really nice lady from the center with me and the dentist spoke english. apparently, the only reason why my tooth was infected was because i don't floss regularly enough, and the accumulation of crap in between my fake tooth and real tooth had caused fake tooth erosion, which had caused an infection under the fake tooth.

the dentist's receptionist was from canada and she was one of the most unpleasant people i've ever met. when i asked as i was leaving if i could please please please get some sort of pain killer she started yelling at me. "you know the only reason you're tooth hurts is because you didn't floss! if you had done this and this and this and this you wouldn't be here blah blah blah blah!!!" geez she was rude. i think i might hate canada a little bit now. oh, and samia was explaining that she came with me b/c i would have gotten lost otherwise , and that stupid receptionist started yelling about how st. peter's, that stupid castle of st. angelo or whoever, and all these other important things are right around the dentist's office. from the way she made it sound, you would think the entire vatican is arranged in a circle, with just the stupid dentist office in the hub of all these important buildings. NOT SO. and i will still get lost if i try to go back again. i felt a lot better when we left and samia said 1] that she never flosses either and 2] that the canadian woman was horrible. i miss southern hospitality so much. i went on a rant, telling samia how in the south people are so calm, and polite, and speak slowly and behave pleasantly towards each other. le sigh.

kim---if you could just give that pin to me as my christmas present when i get back , i'd be ecstatic

megan--i say AP-UH-NINES. everybody else seems to, also, so thats probably right.

less than three months till i touch american soil. i will be counting the days.

props to my friends, keri and laura. on the second horrible night, i stayed at their place b/c my roommates were throwing some party thing that i did not feel up to. they were sooooo nice to me. they brought me water and cold washclothes and laura cooked for me when i finally felt good enough to eat and my bed there was actually more comfortable than the couch i sleep on at my apartment. it made me feel a lot better to not be surrounded by people who are either indifferent or mildly hostile. i totally intend to buy them flowers, once my atm card is working again.

why are southern people nicer
Well, Sarah, I hope you get your tooth taken care of, and the proper medicines for it. And, I think it's funny how, even in the small amount of travelling that I have done-mostly within the United States- that I have noticed that southern people are always nicer.Except for this one sailor that asked me if I had gone to check out Boston's nightlife yet, and the waiters in Boston. It's crazy. And we don't stare at people and mumble like they do in Boston. But I do realize there are other places on the map besides Boston, and I have been to some of those places too, and once again, southern people are nicer.Period.

i agree w/ both of you
you girls have it lucky, at least you have experienced southern hospitality and know what you're missing. so many of the girls i met in spain from the states weren't appaled at the way the spanish or other american guys treated them bc no one had ever taught them they deserved better. it was always funny to watch a girl react to me opening doors, helping them over stuff or down from steps. oo and sarah, remember that homesickness and culture anger goes in cycles. itll get better again. God bless.
