Kerry - a friend for Brian?
Up at 6am to check in for Picton ferry across to Wellington. It was a very wet morning and our cheaper ferry smelt of pee! Due to the low cloud, a scenic crossing was off the cards, so all the passengers seem to huddle down in their jackets and snooze, including Jase. Rachel just sat reading trying not to inhale the acrid ammonia stench whilst ignoring the amorous American backpackers surrounding us. It proved to be a wet welcome in Wellington and we thought the North Island was going to be warmer!

Perfect museum weather! So we visited the highly acclaimed Te Papa museum and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It had lots of fascinating exhibits, including a recreated Marae (Maori meeting house) and settlers stories from the English and Scottish immigrants. Our favourite was the Forces of Nature section, with cool volcano eruptions and an earthquake house simulator. Unfortunately we didn't have any change to operate the Sheep Sheaing Challenge - an inflatable sheep covered in barcodes that you have to scan.

We left Wellington and made good headway travelling North, stopping to camp at Wanganui we must be the Chadsmoor of New Zealand. The owners of Castlecliff Seaside Park were very friendly but rough as badger's backsides, and there was loads of graffiti and dodgy characters lurking about dilapidated shops. Oh well, even New Zealand has to have a chav town.
