Saturday was a day of relaxation...we didn't do much...it was nice and welcomed!
On Sunday we rode the number 7 bus back up to Fiesole. It had rained a bit on Saturday night and the skies looked perfectly clear for some good photo ops. The bus was PACKED! It caught us a little off guard being Sunday and all. Most places are closed and there are just less people out and about - but the number 7 was clearly the exception. We soon found out why. There was this great little antique/flea market happening in the town square. We got off the bus and were greeted by pop-up tents and card tables decked out with all sorts of fun treasure.
There was old furniture - beautiful walnut bookcases and hand carved chairs, intricate jewelry and some very fine linens. Gus was a trooper and let me peruse every stall. We didn't end up buying anything, but it sure was fun to look. This is one of the things we love most about being here, just stumbling on really fun and unusual stuff to do. It's great when you have the time and you aren't rushed to see this or
that and you can just hop on a bus and see where it takes you.
We had lunch at the same trattoria and once again enjoyed their wood oven pizzas. After lunch we decided to walk back down the road to take some more pictures of the villas that dot the hillside. We actually ran into a man we had met at McDonald's during week one at the trattoria. He is a real estate agent and we asked him what the going rate for a home in Fiesole was. It sounds very much like San Diego - for $500k USD you can get a fixer (a REAL fixer - you know, plumbing from the 15th century). But for a cool $1.2M USD you can turn the key and move right into your own villa with attached gardens (of course)! Hmmmm...looks like we aren't the only people who find Fiesole the perfect location. Darn! Anyone wanna go in with us on a place??? 😊 If we split it 6 ways, it's totally more manageable (hee hee hee).
After cavorting down the road for a few miles we decided to get back on the bus and go back to the
One of the Hotels in Fiesole
Such a beautiful building, and the views - amazing! main station to buy our tickets to Rome for Tuesday. Yep, we're off to the "Eternal City" to go see some REALLY old stuff. Should be a good time and I am sure we will write all about it.
Foodie Note: There is a McDonald's across from the main train station that has a "McCafe" attached. Naturally, we had to check it out. After perusing and amusing ourselves with the menu (what's a Caffe Shakerato anyway?), Gus ordered a cappuccino and 2 brioches with marmalade. Shockingly the brioches (croissants to us Americans) were spectacular! Some of the best we've had since we've been here. And the cappuccino - while made with one of those automatic machines - was surprisingly tasty. Who knew? We were duly impressed and decided to have breakfast here the morning we leave for Rome.
We finally got home around 4 o'clock - WAY past nap time - and we started thinking about other side trips. Where shall we go? We like the idea of Croatia - it looks and sounds AMAZING! Prague is at the top of the list and so is Greece. We start surfing the internet and come upon some last minute
cruise deals. Hm, a cruise, that would be fun. So we booked one! Yep! We are going on a Costa Cruise around the Mediterranean! Woo hoo! As Gus eloquently put it, "We're not going to be doing something like this again for a very looooooong time," and that was enough for me! Here is the link to the itinerary:

We leave from Genoa in northern Italy and sail on to Naples, Sicily, Tunisia (how cool is that - Hello, Africa!), Mallorca, Barcelona and Marseilles. Can a girl really complain? We leave on the 14th and are gone for 7 days. Should be fairly great! And as a bonus we upgraded to a mini-suite. Again, using the logic that we really aren't going to be doing something like this again for a REAL long time.
We used Skype for the first time tonight - we Skyped with the Shuttleton Clan back in Long Beach. You gotta love technology! It seemed like we were just in San Diego talking with them on the phone! It was great to see them and to hear some familiar voices.
That may be all the news that's fit to print...until next
time!
Ciao ciao!

Love your blog
Just wanted you to know that we are enjoying every blog entry. I thought it would be a great idea for us in the future, but Ted asked how you had the time to write and send the journal. I would have thought pregnancy might slow Jen down, but I guess not! Enjoy your cruise. We took a cruise last year through from Rome through Naples and to Greece. Such joy!
