transportation strikes and striking it rich

Just a quick one, then I have to go hang my laundry out to dry (on my balcony! how very Italian of me huh?).

Today there was a public transportation strike, which means that from the hours of 8:45 to 3 and from 6 to midnight there were no buses, trams, trains or metro. They give you about a couple days notice and it can totally ruin your travel plans... i.e. the fact that I had to walk to class today. From the other side of the city. At least it was a beautiful day (as it has been for the past week and a half), but an hour walk is not exactly how I like to start my mornings. So yeah, they strike about once a month, for random hours. It doesn't seem very productive, but then again not much in Italy is.

Also, how's this for fate (or luck, however you want to look at it)? My friend Adrienne and her two roommates were at a club one night and were talking to these guys from Switzerland, and the Swiss girls they were with came over to my friends and literally pushed them off the seats and dumped vodka on their heads. Then this other woman came running over and said oh my god I can't believe they did that to you, etc. and helped them clean up. They chatted with her and exchanged phone numbers, and went on with their evenings.

A couple days later they got a call from that woman (Laura) asking them to come out with her. So they did. Turns out this woman is like the Paris Hilton of Italy. So now they are friends with her for some strange reason and she gets them into VIP areas and gets them everything for free and sends Mercedes cars to their apartment to whisk them away to Lake Como for dinner. No joke. This is all amazing and cool but last night it got a little bit absurd - she took them to the Armani Prive club. Translation: Armani private club. They got in free and got to rub elbows with the models and designers that frequent the Armani private club (no Armani himself though, unfortunately, which is probably for the best because Adrienne was planning on addressing him as "Uncle George"). I'm so ridiculously jealous but it's probably better that this didn't happen to me, because I wouldn't have been able to pick myself up off the floor or close my gaping mouth long enough to make any kind of good impression.

In related news, for all you guys and/or sports fans out there, I just found out that Adrienne's father is the famous NFL coach Mike Tice. It was so funny to hear stories about her dad and the silly things he'd do/say and then find out that he's famous, because I hardly ever think of famous people having normal lives. But yep, it's her goofy dad.

Okay that's all for now. Leaving for Monaco early tomorrow morning, so expect updates on Sunday!

Love always,
Jenna
