The Arenal Volcano smoking in the background The International Baptist Church hosted a Family Camp. The camp was held at La Montana Christian camp facility. http://www.lamontana.org/ We had driven past this facility on our way to La Fortuna back in March. We noticed La Montana because we had stopped for brunch at a soda located across the street from the camp. This facility was designed to reach out to the youth of Costa Rica. The grounds consist of a pond for swimming, walking trails, archery range, soccer field, a couple of rivers, volleyball court, high ropes, and a mud obstacle course. In addition there is a recreation building which houses a small store, skating rink, rock climbing and ping pong. An additional pond with rope swings, slides and bike ramps were under construction.
The camp was to begin Friday at 6pm and end at noon on Sunday. We left Santa Ana around 1pm on Friday and arrived at La Montana around 2:15 pm. Since we were early we decided to revisit the soda we had visited in March and grab a bite to eat. The food was just as delicious as we remembered with good prices. With a full belly we ventured over to the camp. We
were greeted by Paul (the preacher of IBC) who showed us to our cabin. The cabin was very clean and rustic. It was a concrete building with 6 bunk beds. A community shower was close by with cold water showers of course. We settled into the cabin and then toured the grounds. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and the perfect place to host camps. Dinner was to be served at 6pm, but remember we are on Costa Rican time so we actually sat down to eat around 7:30pm. The weekend organized events included a bonfire, high ropes and mud obstacle courses (note: Kilon participated and I was the cheerleader in both obstacle course events. Something about walking in mud was not appealing to me….I like to see what is around my feet!). Grayson ATTEMPTED the mud obstacle course, but as soon as his feet were in the mud he started screaming “this is YUCKY…It’s YUCKY”! He DID NOT like it! Kilon carried him out of the mud and put him into my arms. I could smell the stench of the mud! I thought Kilon would probably use this as an excuse to be a bystander, but when I turned around
First night
Kilon and Grayson pose in front of a cute waterfall I saw the back of his head trudging through the mud with no shoes, shirt, etc. One lady told Kilon he should be on survivor. The high ropes event was a little more intriguing to me and something I may have attempted if there were not 50 people standing around watching. Grayson wanted to be strapped on to Kilon’s back, but of course that was not allowed. Kilon did very well. One section (you may be able to see this in the pictures) of the ropes were tied in an “X”….very difficult section. Kilon impressively powered through this portion. He had a few bruises from the event. The bonfire was on Saturday night. The children had a blast. We roasted marshmallows and of course made s’mores. Kilon was a little concerned about some of the children using wood from an old house that probably had lead paint. Outside of the athletic events, we had several vesper services which kept us grounded in the real meaning for attending the camp. The children went to the recreation center during the vesper services. They did several crafts and studied a few bible stories. One of the ladies told me “Grayson is so cute.
Kilon and Monica
Grayson is practicing with the camera We studied Esther today and Grayson told us that he knew it was true because he heard about it on Veggie Tales”. Apparently he sternly said “It’s true, it’s true” which of course this had everyone laughing. During conversations with several families we discovered their children attend Blue Valley School as well. It was good to hear positive feedback to reaffirm our decision to choose this school.
Overall it was a fun filled weekend with several good messages delivered. Grayson did not want to leave and said “Can we just live here forever”? Pretty cool ……. no toys or noise makers, no TV, no computer, nothing but a bed in our room, etc and he was as happy as he could be - one happy camper.
