London to Tokyo

Leaving LondonLeaving LondonLeaving London

Standing at the bus stop on our way to Heathrow
We arrived in Japan early Tuesday 4th Septmeber after an 11 hour flight from London. We had arranged to meet Kevin (our Canadian friend, who now lives in Tokyo) at the train station in Asakusa later that night so we had roughly 10 hours to kill before we met up with him. However as luck would have it Kevin was standing on the platform waiting to go to work, so we said a quick hi and goodbye as he went on his way to work, but what a bizzar situation just bumping into someone without arranging anything before hand, it just shows you how small this work really is sometimes.

Anyhow we dumped our bags in the station lockers and we headed out to see some of the local sights as Asakusa is part of old Japan and so it does not have many highrise buildings that you see in the rest of Tokyo. We first went to see the Senso-Ji temple which was pretty amazing and thereafter we walked around the area finding all sorts of weird and wonderful things. The Japanese people are so friendly and giving, as we soon found out. We found a really nice restaurant for dinner and once we had finshed we went outside to see that it was tipping it down, we were just about to make a run for it when our waiter tells us to stop and wait whilst we went inside to find us a complimentary umbrella. We then met up with Kevin for the second time and headed on back to his house for a good catch up.

The next day we went into central Tokyo to see the Imperial Palace gardens which were stunning, as you can expect everything is immacucately kept without a blade of grass out of place. We also headed into Ginza which is famous for its shopping, it was the first place in Tokyo to get all the expensive shops etc. It is the Oxford street of Tokyo and it is the place where you go to be seen throwing your money around, which of course we are not able to do at this point in time. It is also where alot of the big neon lights thats you see in postcards as well as pictre come from. We met Kevin and Gary (Kevins housemate) after work at around 10pm for a quite dinner (or so we thought) and ended up talking and drinking until 6am and in our state deciding that it would be a good idea to go and see the world largest fish auctions which start at 5am...Somewhere along the line of going home to get changed sensibility kicked in and we decided that it was best to get some rest and go and see it tomorrow morning. Needless to say with the jet lag kicking in and a long night out we only woke up today at 4pm, so we have wasted a day but it has been ok as a thyphoon is on its way so we have batted down the hatches and preparing oursleves for a rough night. We are hoping that it will not last long but it is quite exciting in its own right. It has been over 30 degrees everyday and night with humidity of around 90 percent so it is a bit of a shock to the system after leaving London.

Anyhow we miss you all and hope to hear all your news as soon as we can.

Love Al and Se
