Harding Icefield - Seward
Beware of nasty crevices! My turn to kick off, as I compose the latest installment I must tell you that I am currently some way up the internal passage, it may be a bit wet but having been here a few hours now I must say I cant think of anywhere I would rather be it is really exhilarating. June for some reason has just suggested I give a few more details about our location. We are in a very nice hostel in the capital city of Alaska called Juneau. Juneau is situated within the Alaskan waterway known as the internal passage, a group of islands close packed with glaciers and mountains, hence my excitement. We are now into our third week in Alaska and packing in as much as we can. The people we have met along the way have been very friendly and all seem to have time to chat. I think my social skills are definately improving as before I was quite good at talking about things of interest such as me and what I was upto but not so good at talking about less interesting things like other people and what they were up to. Any way before I go off
Big catch
Harbour side at Seward on a tangent I shall get back to what ive been up to. Having said the Alaskan people we have met have been great there is always the odd exception, an error of judgement on Junes part led to us striking up a dubious friendship. We arrived at a campsite in Seward and whilst trying to work out the registration process June asked an odd looking couple for help. She missed a few telltale signs that they might not be 'best friend material'. They were carrying a carrier bag of beer cans at ten in the morning, swaying around like a couple of MFI wardrobes, screeching and laughing, for a tent had a sheet of green plastic propped up by a stick, and had about three teeth between them. The female/wife/sister/combination of/ pointed us over to a site by a tree saying it would be a good place to have loadsa sex. We beat a hasty retreat and said we don't do that sort of thing we are British. Over the course of the next few days we kept bumping in to them, to top it all we ended up on a 2 hour bus trip with them where they caused
Valley View
Good hike - Seward havoc, the female/wife/sister/combination of kept asking the driver to stop so she could 'go pee' , the driver eventually pulled over for her. While she was behind a bush shaking her lettuce the male/husband/brother/combination of dutifully stood guard over her to keep bears away ! ... I think he need not have worried.
I don't make many mistakes but that was probably a corker. Now we had better tell you where we have been and what we have seen. We had two nights in Seward on the Kenai peninsula, went down to the harbour and saw all the fishermen hauling in their catches. Alaskans live for fishing and everything out here seems to be huge, that includes the fish, sea otters and locals. We hired a car for four days and drove round to a town called Homer described by a local as a drinking town with a fishing problem. From here we went on a sea kayaking trip. The weather was glorious, views of the mountains and glaciers spectacular and wildlife viewing topnotch. Bumped into a minke whale on the way across. Dropped our car off at Seward and took on the famous Mt Marathon trail, a steep 3
mile climb to 3,000 ft which once a year some mad people run, slept well that night. Next stop Whittier by bus with our best friends. The plan was to catch a ferry the next day to Bellingham (7days). We camped at the foot of a glacier next to a salmon stream and shared it with a couple of bears who just happened to be roaming the camp looking for scraps. our crisp packet didn't give much protection against a hungry black bear so need less to say we didn't get much sleep that night. All I had was a little bell to to tinkle (a fat lot of good that did). The next day we did another great glacier walk and then found out our ferry had been cancelled. Caught the train back to Anchorage which turned out to be fun, the driver even stopped to look at a pod of beluga whales frollicking about in the bay. Another night in the hostel and a chance to raid the free food cupboard (not that we are cheap skates). A hastily arranged flight to Juneau which brings us to where we are now. Due to pick up the ferry tonight
Elephant Island - Homer
Sea kayaking on a perfect day. for the onward trip through the inside passage (no inuendo) to Bellingham. next installement in a couple of weeks.
