Hi Everyone - sorry about the lack of pics on this entry! The internet is pretty slow here but we will add them when we find a better connection!
Well, after departing from Cambodia we travelled to Bangkok where we met our friend Krish (who used to live in England, but is now back in his home land of India after being unfairly kicked out by the British government!). Anyway, ranting over, it was great to see him since we hadn't in over a year and after a day in Bangkok catching up we travelled down to the island of Koh Tao, off the south-east coast in the Gulf of Thailand. Here we spent 4 peaceful days enjoying the beautiful beaches and doing some snorkelling. The island is renowned for it's diving and the sea life was absolutely amazing - at one point we had the biggest shoal of fish beneath us that I've ever seen, and the colour and variety of fish was pretty incredible. The food was also great here - enjoyed several seafood BBQs on the beach.
We then travelled over to Koh Phagnan where we went to the Full Moon Party - basically the biggest
beach party in the world! It was crazy with thousands and thousands of people crammed together on a beach drinking potent cocktails from buckets and doing stupid stuff - like jumping a skipping rope of fire in Adam's case just for fun!! One day on the island we hired mopeds and jetted off for a bit of exploration. We randomly drove through a local party in celebration of a former King (Rama V) when we were invited in. We joined the Thai people to watch dancing and a procession before having free food and drinks! It was great fun to be so welcomed!Next we had to travel back to Bangkok to sadly say goodbye to Krish.
Travelled up to Chiang Mai where we did a cookery course. We were taught by a famous chef who has his own TV show in Thailand and learned to make Thai green curry, spicy tom yum soup and many more. We got to eat all we cooked so after 6 courses we were pretty stuffed! The following day we met our friends from university Steph and Mark (who were already travelling in Thailand) and Katy and Beth (who came for a 2 week
holiday to see us). We decided to throw Katy and Beth in at the deep end and take them to a Thai boxing match where all the waitresses were lady boys! The boxing was pretty strange since they start off with small kids fighting each other but it was interesting none the less!! Spent the following day doing a trip deep into the forest on ATVs (like quad bikes). The terrain was pretty rough and we all had a few wheel spins and slides but it was great fun! In the afternoon we went white water rafting. Managed to stay in the raft for most of the rapids but our guides insisted on throwing us in at every opportunity! Spent the next couple of days visiting local markets, seeing temples, being massaged and celebrating Beth's birthday. Oh, not to mention the deep fried grubs and crickets we tried from a street vendor!
Next we took the overnight train down to Bangkok. We were running pretty late so it was a well formed military operation, with some of us taking the bags, some the tickets and some trying to delay the train but we just managed to make it on
time. On arrival in Bangkok we visited the Grand Palace and the temple of the Emerald Buddha, before taking a trip to the weekend market for some serious shopping.
Headed straight down to the beaches of Koh Phagnan the following day for a couple of days of relaxation for a nice end to the girls' holiday. Apart from sunning ourselves we also went to the Black Moon Party (the opposite to the full moon since there is no moon!) and enjoyed another party on the beach.
Headed back up to Bangkok (again! about the 5th time we have been to Bangkok on our trip - it's starting to feel like home!) and had to bid farewell to our good friends. However, no sooner had Katy, Beth, Mark and Steph left us to go there own ways we had our other good friends from home - Michelle, Sara and Rob coming over to start their year away!
We stayed in Bangkok a day or two but after a while it's definitely a city that you can leave without hard feelings! Headed down to Phuket to get some sun, sea and relaxation on the beaches there and were fortunate
enough that despite bad weather our flight was a safe one. We're sure you've all heard what happened two days after we arrived in Phuket - it was a very sad day.
Spent the next 4/5 days in Patong and then Phuket town with the guys -had a lot of fun catching up, eating good food, go-karting, surfing and having a few nights out before we moved on to Kuala Lumpur.
We'll miss Thailand but we have enjoyed the time we spent here and are excited about moving on to finish the Asian leg of our tour.
Miss you all as ever.
