Biarritz
What an amazing location After the wettest summer on record we decided it was time to give England the arse and head for something that reminded us of home.... sunshine and surf! Destination: Biarritz, France.
Just to give you a bit of background - The seaside resort of Biarritz is on the west coast of France, about 15 minutes from the Spanish boarder. It made a name for itself in the 19th century when Napolean III and his wife used to hang out there. It's been one of THE places to go for weathly French families for years and nowadays everyone is coming to check out the place that has some of Europe's best surfing and water sports. Us included!
So we left the raining, windy London behind and made the 1.5 hour flight down to Biarritz praying for some good weather. We arrived Thursday afternoon to a little rain and some big winds but we were still super excited as it was at least 5 degrees warmer than London - we're easily excited!
After manouvering public transport and a walk in the rain we arrived to our hotel. And what a hotel it was. We had been somewhat worried when we
Along the waterfront
The white building next to the church is our hotel. booked it as, well, Adam's French isn't all that good (other than to order beers) but we were pleasantly surprised not only how nice, clean and big (by European standards) it was, but also how central it was. And talk about a view to die for! You'll see from the photos that we certainly lapped it up 😊
So we had a bit of a wander around (or rather got blown around) on Thursday afternoon before heading off to find something tasty for dinner... it is us after all! Yes Ben this is a paragraph on food....Thanks to it being so close to the Spanish border we had a nice choice of both French and Spanish food. After some tapas, beer and sangria at a pub near our hotel we let our noses point us in the direction of the biggest paella I'd ever seen! Again - the photos will show us pretty excited 😊
Ok so fast forward to Friday morning. We awake (lying in bed watching the surfers off the coast - yes we had an amazing view) and take in the goodness that is SUNSHINE! After a long, lazy breakfast of espresso and pastries we
head off. Adam is on a mission. He wants to basically walk from one end of the bloody place to the other! So as the photos will show - we walked from our hotel right along the main beach and up to the headland with the lighthouse on it. Lots of exploring, rock climbing, dodgy french public toilets and photos later we've seen one half of what Biarritz has to offer. Not half bad!
By this stage the day has well and truly heated up but not matter how much I begged, Adam would not let me spend the afternoon at the beach. We had more exploring to do. So after a killer ham and cheese toastie and a hamburger and chip panini (yes the french version of a hot chip sandwich) it was off again for the other half of the coast line.
Again the photos will show what the coast line had to offer, very nice indeed! So 4 hours and 2 blisters into our massive hike, I put my foot down. NO MORE WALKING. Adam finally agreed and cooled me down with some tasty gelati and a nice quiet seat over looking the massive walk
Adam scouting for locations
I was wondering why he was distracted at the start of our holiday. Little did I know. we'd just done. DRUM ROLL PLEASE......
The next bit of the story is somewhat hazy as I think I was in a state of shock for a few hours following, but it went something along the lines of wanting to spend the rest of his life with me and asking me to marry him whilst producing a beautiful diamond ring 😊 Ha ha, and after a few "Oh my god, oh my god..... are you serious?......" - I did manage to spit out ".....Of course I will"!!!
As I said the next few hours were a bit of a blur for the both of us as we giggled and talked and giggled and freaked out and generally come to terms with the extremely grown up (or crazy!) thing that had just happened! Needless to say the only obvious thing to do was drink lots of champagne and celebrate!! We went out and had a great dinner, lots of drinks and pondered the future of Mr and Mrs Adam Hinds...!!
Saturday and Sunday were both great days (they could have been rubbish and we still would have been smiling!), lots of sunshine, swimming and lazing about was done.
Biarritz is an amazing place
Another view up towards our hotel next to the church Just what the doctor ordered! We finally felt like we were having a little summer holiday and rainy old London felt like a world away.
The photos pretty much sum up our trip. It was definitely unforgettable and something we'll be talking about for a while to come yet. We left London pale, cold and grumbly and came home happy, tanned, relaxed and most importantly.....engaged!
