The day we climbed the "Elafante"

OK, so these pictures are actually from August...they've been saved on here since then, just waiting for me to actually WRITE something. I wanted to include a picture of the small mountain/big hill that we climbed so you could see why we call it the "elephant", but that will have to wait until another day. (I'm such a slacker).

Anyway, from my host family's house we can go down a steep slope (after crossed a barbed wire fence), then "balance" on a tube over a small river/big stream, walk through a make-shift soccer field, and finally make our way up "the elephant". It's only a 20 minute or so hike up, but it gives a lovely view of Copan and the surrounding mountains.

I climbed it for the first time in August, then again with some teachers after school started, and then again just this week with my host family kids. It was a hot sunny day, so afterwards we swam in the stream for a bit, even though the water was freezing!! (The temps have been so much better lately. Cold mornings, but hot by the afternoon. Reminds me of a perfect fall day in Michigan.)

These pictures are with Daniel, David, Sarai, and our neighbor (and my old student) Carlos. The stream is a great place to explore. It's like a whole other world! Although there are tons of rocks and it hurts to walk barefoot. Also, the first time we went I got a bit carried away with exploring, ended up slipping on a rock and gashing me leg between two boulders. There's still a little dent in my shin. All part of the adventure though. 😊

...We call it the elephant because from a distance it looks like the head and back of an elephant. Hopefully I'll have a photo of that soon. Um...cold here is low 60s...maybe it reaches the 50s on the really bad days. I guess compared to Minnesota we're roasting. :)
