To get away from one's working environment is, in a sense, to get away from one's self; and this is often the chief advantage of travel and change. ~Charles Horton Cooley

July 5, 2007. We left Grand Marais Campground and explored the town. We did some shopping in the little town of Grand Marais. Bob found the World’s Best Donut Shop. Driving north to Judge Magney State Park, we registered for two days. It is the closest campground to Grand Portage our destination for tomorrow.
The weather was hot but soon we had rain, heavy at times. We started out on a hike to Devil’s Kettle, we had raincoats but the humidity was high. The hike followed the Burle River. Our campground was nice and quiet. There seems to be a pattern, the state parks are the best places, with trails and clean showers, but no hook-ups.
July 6, 2007. At the very tip corner of northeast Minnesota is a town called Grand Portage and a National Park (NP) with the same name. Next to the NP office is a large re-enactment trading post complete with actors.
The Isle Royale is our destination today. Public transportation is by boat or seaplane only. Since the water level of Lake Superior is down more than 16 inches, the Winonah is not available. So we took the Voyageur II across from the mainland, Grand Portage to Windigo, Isle Royale (IR). Due to the remote location and the pristine wilderness, the IR is one of the least visited of the National Parks. It is too bad because it is beautiful. It is open from April 16 to October. From the mainland it took us about 2 hours plus. Once there, we opted for the Feldmann Lake Trail that led to Grace Creek Overlook, about 3.6 miles. From the overlook we searched for moose and wolves, but no luck, although we did see “evidence” of moose!? It was a grand day, one of the nicest hikes ever. On our return trip we stopped at Rock of Ages Lighthouse for some photos. Well it is back to Magney State Park for the evening.

Have you considered.....
Have you considered that the reason the state parks are so nice is exactly because there are no "hook ups" ? I'm glad to hear it, I'll be going myself soon. Your blog sort of inspired it, so thanks. :)

Bah, Geographical lines are abitrary, Isle Royale has more in common with MN than MI, might as well be a part of MN.
