This morning we headed off to Bath. Bath is a medium sized Georgian town with a natural hot springs. When the Romans occupied England over 2000 years ago they built the Roman Baths which now sit in the center of Bath City. The baths were used as a religious spa where everyone from the town came to worship the Roman gods, socialize, and drink lots of wine. When the Romans left England 400 years later the baths were forgotten about and were covered in mud. Only 180 years ago they were rediscovered and dug out. Now, they are a major site that people come to see.

While in Bath we also went to the Bath Abbey. It was built in 1499 by Bishop Oliver King who tore down the Norman Cathedral to build the Abbey. The Abbey is beautiful inside and has a very intricate ceiling which was my favourite of all the churches I have seen in England.

We also walked over Pulteney Bridge and headed down to the Weir. You may ask, what the heck is a weir. It is a terraced set of steps in the river which is used to keep the water from flowing quite so quickly. It also makes for a nice sight to sit and look at.

Finally, we drove past the Bath Royal Crescent. Ian circled it five times until everyone was pointing and laughing at us 😊

After Bath we headed to the town of Wells. The local farmers just finished “muckspreading” which is the process of spreading cow poo over the fields. The entire town smelled terrible. Nevertheless, it didn’t keep us from going to the Wells Cathedral, which was one of the largest churches I have ever seen. Apparently, Wells wanted to be considered a city versus a town. In England, in order to be a city the area must have a cathedral. So, the town built the Wells Cathedral, which is by far the largest structure within a 45 mile radius.

Bath
So did you take a bath? Okay, that was so not funny, but it's late, and I amused myself, so I guess that's something. But seriously, I don't know of anyone who has visited Bath who has actually jumped in the baths so I think it would be cool. Report back.
