Gateway to the Orient

We arrived at HK airport and took the 'MTR' metro train to 'Kowloon'. Hong Kong was hot, and really humid, quite a contrast to Australia at this time of year. Walking through the brightly light streets we were approached by numerous locals offering hostel accommodation. Our room was just about big enough to fit two people, but on the plus had a much appreciated air-con unit. The streets of Hong Kong were bright with the glow of neon, and the bustle of people... at 10pm you'd think it was day if you avoided glancing to the dark night sky.

Next day we took the ferry across the harbour to HK Island. There were a couple of buildings we'd planned to look around (in a strictly geeky architectural sense), including the bank of china and HSBC (by foster). Needless to say our business disguise (including travellers clothing, cameras and in Fred’s case, an ice cream) failed to allude the security guards, and we soon turffed out. Still we got a quick look around.

We took the tram though the city, and explored back streets and 'Man Mao temple', which was intriguing... although i must say, all that incense somewhat exasperated the heat situation!

A highlight was definitely riding the tram to the hills behind the city... this provided excellent views, we also took a walk up to Victoria peak. That evening we strolled through the night markets and bright neon streets back to the hostel... I can't help but wander where all the energy for that neon comes from....

Great to hear of your latest travels Tom-thanks for the blogs.Chris says he went on a boat trip from Hong Kong harbour a few months ago, but it was a load of old junk!X
