Angkor Wow!!!

Na een korte maar erg bochtige vliegreis (onze piloot was erg van het bochtjes maken en langs de wolken zig-zaggen; normaal vlieg je in een rechte lijn, maar op de vlucht van een uur heeft hij ongeveer 20 U-turn achtige bochten gemaakt!) zijn we in het warme Cambodja aangekomen; Phnom Penh (de heuvel van Pehn) om precies te zijn.

Wat als eerste opvalt is de chaos in het verkeer! We waren wel wat gewend van Bangkok, maar hier schijnen helemaal geen verkeersregels te zijn; auto's die aan de linker kant van de weg rijden terwijl de rest allemaal rechts rijdt of andersom, fietsers midden om de weg en mensen die ongeveer aan het picknicken waren op het kruispunt...

Wonder boven wonder zijn we heelhuids aangekomen bij ons Guesthouse. Dit hostel lag super mooi aan een meer en eten, relaxen en filmpjes kijken gebeurde dan ook buiten met een lake-view; echt ontzettend mooi!

In Phnom Penh zijn we cultureel gaan doen en zijn we naar het Royal palace geweest. Het complex, waar de koning nogsteeds woont, is gigantisch en in schril contrast met mensen die buiten om een paar Riel aan het bedelen zijn. De dag erna zijn we naar de (in)famous Killingfields gegaan. Dit uitstapje was heel indrukwekkend; wanneer je de killingfields binnengaat loop je tegen een piramida aan met schedels van de 8000 gedoodde Cambodjanen.. Dit zorgt ervoor dat je wel even bij de les blijft. Het rondlopen daar gebeurd in een ijzige stilte, zeker wanneer er verteld wordt dat de kledingresten die er liggen van de mensen zijn die er op de meest brute manier zijn afgeslacht. Na deze trip hebben we nog een beetje in de stad rondgelopen; en na de hele geschiedenis van cambodja te hebben gehoord en ook te hebben gezien kijk je absoluut met andere ogen naar de cambodjanen.

Na Phnom Pehn zijn we, met een speedboat!!, door gegaan naar Siem Reap. De bootreis was echt super, lekker op het zonnedek van de zon en het uitzicht genieten! Na zes uur was het eindelijk zover, Siem Reap en de Tempel van Angkor Vat!

Na een fiets te hebben gehuurd en 3-dagen pas te hebben aangeschaft gingen we op weg naar het Angkor gebied. En elke superlatieven die ooit gebruikt zijn om dit te beschrijven zijn waar; Angkor Vat is in één woord 'fantastisch' (en heel groot! maar dat zijn 2 woorden). De eerste dag hebben we de bekendste tempels bekeken, Angkor Vat en Angkor Thom. Persoonlijk vond ik Angkor Thom (met ongeveer 1200 gezichten in steen) het meest indrukwekkend. De tweede dag hebben we wat kleinere tempels die verder weg stonden bezocht en de laatste dag hebben we een aantal tempels buiten Siem Reap bezocht. Ik zal hier een aantal van de 200 foto's laten zien, voor een uitgebreidere voorstelling nodig ik jullie thuis uit als ik weer terug ben 😉

Overmorgen vertrekken we weer uit Cambodja en gaan we naar Laos en daar hopelijk een auto/motor huren en door de jungle heen rijden! Oja, ander goed nieuws, de laatste twee weken ga ik niet in Thailand maar in Australie doorbrengen! Joel (Skippy, uit Wenen) en ik gaan een soort roadtrip langs de Westkust van Australie maken 😊

ENGLISH PART

After a short flight, with a lot of turns (our pilot really liked making many turns along the clouds. While every other pilot would fly in a straight line, ours achieved to make about 20 U-turn like turns in approximately 20 minutes.) we landed in the sunny Cambodia in the capital city Phnom Penh (the hill of Penh).

The first thing which struck us was the chaotic travic. We were already used to the crowded roads downtown in Bangkok, but it seemed to us, Cambodian people didn’t learn any travic regulations. Cars at the wrong side of the road, driving up against the flow of travic. People on bikes in the middle of all the cars, tuk-tuks and motorbikes and people who had a picnic in the middle of an intersection…

Happily we arrived, alive and without any accidents, at our guesthouse. The Number 9 guesthouse was situated at the lake, so we enjoyed our dinner at the waterside and the lounge with a large T.V. and a DVD-player had a lake-view. Marvelous!

In Phnom Penh we went on a cultural tour downtown to visit the Royal Palace. The courtyard which still houses the King’s residence was huge and was a hard contrast with the world around the palace where people were begging for a couple of Riels (the national currency). The day after we went to the Killing Fields. This trip was very impressive. The moment you enter the fields, you stumble into a 8-story high pyramid filled with the skulls of the at least 8000 killed Cambodians. Walking around in the fields is done in silence, while you are told under which conditions and in which ways the people were slaughtered, and then you realize that the clothes which are visible in the mud are the clothes of those people who had been killed. This really made an impression.
After the trip we went down town to walk around, and after hearing and seeing the relatively young and brutal history of the country you really look through different eyes to the Cambodian people.

After Phnom Penh we went to Siem Reap by boat. The trip was lovely! Chilling on top of the roof in the sun, enjoying the view over the water and into the beautiful scenery. After six hours on the water, we arrived in Siem Reap and the town near the famous temples of Angkor Vat!

We rented two bikes at our guesthouse en bought a 3-day ticket for the Angkor temple area. Angkor Vat is really a very impressive sight, and probably every single one of the stories you might have heard about it, is true. The temples really amazed us, the size and the amount of detailed bass-reliefs in the walls and pillars were so impressive it took us almost an entire day to visit only two of the temples. These were the most famous ones, as said, Angkor Vat and the second famous Angkor Thom, which I personally found (with about 1200 faces carved in the stones) most attractive. The second day we visited some smaller temples which were located a little further down the jungle, and the last day we visited some of the first built temples to the east of Siem Reap. I can only show a small selection of the more than 200 pictures we took, but you are all invited to come and see them all when I am back home.

The day after tomorrow we will again leave Cambodia to head to Laos, where we want to rent a car or motorbikes to make a tour through the jungle. Ow, other great news, the last two weeks of my vacation I will not spent in Thailand, but in Australia! Me and Joel (Skippy, from Vienna) will make a road-trip along the western coastline of Australia.

great to see you are having such a great time exploring SEA! i wasn't surprised at all to hear that the thai ladies were so interested in you! you sure they weren't lady boys though... :P keep the english versions of your blog coming!!! looking forward to showing you around WA!!
