I finally completed my open water dive certificate at Kaikoura. The last 3 weeks it had been postphoned because of bad weather.

The first day was really good, it was cold but just tolerable. The first dive was particularly enjoyable. I basically hung onto the instructor as he pulled me around the bottom of the ocean. The visibility was only about 1-1.5 metres, but I saw paua, kina, a hermit crab and a paddle crab. There was apparently a butterfish right in front of me, but at the time I thought it was a piece of kelp. I pulled a paua off a rock, I thought they were meant to stick on really tightly? Later I was told it's illegal to catch them using scuba gear... opps. The 2nd dive was just to go over some skills, which went well.

The second day was not so good. The wind was stronger and getting into a damp wetsuit was not fun. The water itself was extremely cold, about 9 degrees on the surface and 7 below. I was so cold, I was almost tempted to give up, but really wanted to get it finished. So I stuck in there. There was two dives which again involved doing skills. The boys went back for a third dive, for fun but myself and the other girl were just too cold. Vis was less than half a metre so there wasn't much to see. It took about an hour for the feeling to come back into my feet and I was sitting in my sleeping bag for the trip back. I can't remember ever have being so cold!

Anyway, now I will be able to scuba in Fiji which will be a lot warmer. 5 days!
