This week there were three events at school.
The first was "el dia de maestro" on the monday, which is literally "teachers day". The kids all came to school and said happy teachers day and some of the kids even brought some picked flowers for us, it was really sweet. When it came to having lunch the family that help us co-ordinate the project and give us lunch had made a card for all of the maestros. It was up in the classroom that we eat in at lunch and they had brought us a bottle of coke to celebrate, it was a good day.
The second event that occured in the school was the monthly birthday celebrations. On the last day of every month we have a birthday party and the kids that had a birthday in that month get a present from their teacher. We also play a traditional birthday game called "pinata". This is a big wire framed model which is attached to a line and the aim of the game is to hit it hard enough to make the sweets fall out and then all make a mad dash for them. If a child is 7 years for example they are spun around 7 times and then they have 7 hits at the pinata. The kids really enjoy it and when the sweets fall out it is mayhem!!!! After that game we divided all the classes into 4 teams and played relay races with running, hopping and hopscotch. At the end of the day there is a drink "Rosa de Jamaica" and tacos with tomato and cheese. It is a really good day and the kids love it.
The third event in the week was "Fathers Day" which was held on the Sunday. This was the first Fathers Day event at the school and it was hoped that as many dads would turn up as possible. In total there was about 45 fathers there. The day was opened with Elena (the mother of the family and a strong figure in the community who helps co-ordinate the project) introducing everyone and explaining about the importance of education for the children in the community and how much the kids benefit from coming to school. The other part of the fathers day was a new project where the fathers are given 10lb worth of seeds to cultivate and provide food for their families. The seeds that were given out this year were "frijoles" (beans). The seeds were given out at the end of the day, before that some of the kids performed little dances and we played some party games with the dads - apple bobbing and the chocolate game!! We decorated the school with lots of balloons making it look really nice. The day was a real success and the fathers really seemed to enjoy it, it was also really nice to get involved in another aspect of the project.
Every week on a Thursday we give out certificates to students who have attended every day and who we think have done well in the week. See photos.
