We stayed at Gladstone for 4 nights in total, Rex had this sail fixed and we stocked up with supplies for a few days.
We are going into “the narrows” which is between the mainland and Curtis Island linking Gladstone harbour with Keppel Bay, a narrow pass which need s to be sailed on hide tide as its very shallow to the point of being dry at low tide.
I was quite happy to leave Gladstone, a strange type of town, the marina was great with good facilities and friendly staff.
Met with everybody and had a fix on Cappuccinos.
Say good bye to the “Kids” Craig, Evelyn and David, three young American’s sailing like us, on board “Maia” and heading to Yapoon where they will meet up with Evelyn’s mum who is flying from San Francisco, and sail until October around the Whitsunday.
After our last big breakfast at the local coffee shop got ready to leave around 10:00am.
Sailed through for only two hours till we reached Black Swan Creek a nice place to anchor for the night, and wait for the tide tomorrow, but by the time we anchored we heard on the radio that “The Catch” who had left the night before, was in trouble, gear box trouble and was trying to get back to Gladstone marina with sails only, the winds where against them and couldn’t go too far an with the risk of running a ground.
So we got into our dingy and went up creek to meet them and push then along the narrows until they got enough wind to sail, then further down a rescue boat from the marina came to guide them back. Lets hope that what ever problem they have can be fixed easily. I am sure we will see them at Yellow Patch.
In the afternoon we joined Frank and Jane on board their yacht “Escondido” who we meet at Pancake Creek and were anchored next to us, for a sun downer. They have sailed this waters many times so tomorrow we will follow them through the narrows until we reach Pacific Sands, and maybe stay for the night before we continue to Yellow Patch.
Its good to talk to other people who knows the area, it makes you feel so much more confident.
The winds have been up through the day but tonight is calm and all the stars are out and shining brightly.
We had a look around on the dingy this morning on low tide and Oh MY GOD the pass is totally DRY.....this is around 10:00am, and high tide is at 16:00pm, let hope that everything will go well on our attempt.
