Friday, July 6, 2007 Friday morning was misty and cool. We went to the Butze Rapids Hiking Trail just outside of town. The rapids are known for having a “reversing tide”. The tide rushes out and then changes directions and rushes back in. The water level drops about 15 feet twice a day. When it’s full moon, the reversal can cause waves up to 6 feet high. It’s not full moon, but we thought it would be interesting to see.
We arrived in the morning when the tide was about 3 hours from being at its lowest point. It was a great hike through a rain forest (PR gets about 100 inches of rain a year). The trees and ferns were huge with moss over everything. It reminded me of the mid-evil forests you see in the movies. The hike followed the shoreline for awhile and the air had a salty tang. We walked for about three hours and could see the water level go down during that time. We also saw a common loon and several eagles( pretty common in PR).
I enjoyed the walk (about 3 miles). Frank liked it so much he went back 2 more times to check the water level (about half the total distance). Once was enough for me.
Later in the afternoon we checked out the Museum of Northern British Columbia, a small museum featuring the artifacts and culture of the First Nations people (what the native people are called) who populated the area. They were great artists.
Tomorrow we catch the ferry. We don’t have to be at the terminal until 3:00 so there will be plenty of time to get ready.

WOW!
Great photos and text! I'm just getting a chance to get caught up--I think the last time I was on the site you hadn't made it past Cleveland--certainly a big difference now! It looks like you will have enough material for a book when you are finished.
