We left Coffs harbor nice and early in the morning so that we could have leisurely drive up to Yamba and then may even have time to go and lie on the beach once we got there. Well that was the plan anyway but my car had other ideas, about 50ks along the road it started miss firing, so I pulled over and had a look at a few things but without any tools etc I couldn’t do that much so I opted to take it to a garage in the next town along.
The bloke at the garage had a look at the car and after about 30 mins he came back to me and explained that who ever had serviced the car last had changed all but one of the spark plugs as it was jammed in there and was now totally shot to pieces. So once he finally struggled to get it out and chaged we were back on the road again with the car running sweet as a dream, so carried on up to Yamba.
We still got there in plenty of time arriving just after lunch at this very nice well kitted out campsite. This
One of the lovely beach in Yamba
Only one person on the whole beach was our most expensive campsite but it had a great pool and BBQ area which really appealed to us, especially as we had been in Australia over 2 months now and hadn’t had a BBQ yet!!
We got the tent set up and the spent all afternoon around by the pool swimming a reading my book - no walking today for a change. Well actually later that evening we did walk 2kms into town to see what’s going on but that was far to short to be considered a proper walk by our standards ha ha.
Yamba is a very small town on the coast and is known as being a very quite but extremely beautiful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. So during the night there is nothing to do or see as everything is closed apart from the fish and chippy that sells the world’s largest portion of chips ever! So we walked around, eat some chips and headed back to the campsite to read and watch TV.
Emily and I had been so busy site-seeing, exploring and traveling from place to place over the past 2 weeks we really haven’t had
a day to chill out a do nothing for a while so all day we lounged around by the pool, read our books and soaked up the rays all day. Later that evening we managed to get this huge pack of meat from the shop which included 4 lamb chops, 3 steaks and loads of sausages all for 10 dollars (4 quid!!). So we proceeded to stuff our selves stupid with our first BBQ in Australia and boy did it taste good and of course washed down with a few cold beverages to enhance the flavor!
The next day we got up early and headed for a walk around the area, we found some really beautiful beaches before walking up to the lighthouse which gave us a great view into the natural harbor of Yamba. This place was naturally beautiful like South West rocks, the kind of place that no picture ever does justice, it is a truly stunning area that you can’t stop starring at in wonder.
We walked to the end of the pier and sat to see if we could see any whales when we got chatting to a really cool Aussie bush fireman called Steve
who was up here doing a presentation on bush fires in NSW. He was great laugh and invited us to join him for a drink later that evening.
Keeping with finding new wildlife at every place we have been to, today we found all these little blue soldier crabs, now normally I wouldn’t be that impressed with 1 or 2 small crabs but when you see 1000’s of them running and then diving into the sand and disappearing it makes for an amazing site. When you see them in the distance and all running off together it looks like a whole portion on sand had just got up a run off!! Also the sound is terrific, there bodies are only the size of a mini egg but when a couple of 1000 run at the same time the make one hell of a noise - so cool!
After some lunch over looking the harbor we drove of to Angorie national park where there are apparently some really cool natural pools, one blue pool and one green pool. Now to me they looked both the same color and I couldn’t tell which was which but they did look really nice
and were worth the walk. We carried on walking along the rocky shore line to a beach which had huge waves where we then witnessed some truly amazing surfing. I have seen a fair bit of surfing up and down the coast but these were by far the best surfers I have seen, one of the kids couldn’t have been more then 12 and he was incredible.
We had finished watching the surfers walked to this small look out where we got a great view of the beach we were just on. We also got to see some really noisy multicolored parrots which were cool but by now the sun was starting to go down and was starting to get cold and so we walked back to the car and headed back to the campsite.
We had another lovely BBQ to finish all that meat from yesterday then headed of into town to go a meet Steve for some beers. We had a great laugh with him and learnt about bush fires, the wildlife that we had seen in NSW and best on all how to find south by the stars if I ever get lost!! Thanks Steve that ones
going be real useful at some point.
I was really impressed with Yamba, it was so like South West rocks, very quite and a non existent night life but so unbelievable beautiful and relaxing! We were sad to leave as everyone had made us feel so at home but we had to as we now were now heading of to the infamous Bryon bay.
On our way up to Bryon bay we stopped briefly at this small Scottish town called Maclean as all the telegraph poles in the town where painted with different tartan colors representing different Scottish clans. There wasn’t much else in the town of interest to us but it was cool seeing all these various tartan telegraph pole, supposedly there are over 200 different colored ones in the town! Strange but defiantly unique.
