Living the "schmodelly" life at Tank
Since I haven’t done anything too adventurous or touristy this week on account of the whole school and class thing getting in the way, I decided that I should update my devoted readers on the culinary and nightlife scenes in Cape Town. I still have plenty of things that I want to try, but just to recap some of the highlights of the last two weeks (I can’t believe I’ve been here for two weeks already!)

The staple place we’ve been has been Café Manhattan. Manhattan is the heart of the gay nightlife in Cape Town, but also happens to have the best hamburgers I’ve ever tasted in my life. These things are huge! And they’re only $7. On Sunday nights, Manhattan hosts one of the premier musical acts in the city: Three Tons of Fun. This is a trio of, well, large women, who sing Motown and disco hits to the delight of the patrons of Manhattan. They are usually dressed in lots of blue sequined dashikis. My professor likes this group to what is almost an unhealthy and frightening degree.

Tank is the local sushi and pacific-rim hangout. It’s very trendy, lit with an eerie blue

light with all white modern Danish furniture, and a huge aquarium lining one wall (where the name comes from, I suppose). It’s a very yuppie type place, but their sushi is pretty good, and I had smoked warthog carpaccio as an appetizer here. It tasted remarkably like pork, but slightly gamier. They also have the best dessert ever; a chocolate graham cracker shell with chocolate mousse and passionfruit coulis on top.

A group of us went to a place called Beluga, which was VERY classy. The meal/atmosphere there is very reminiscent of top restaurants in the states, and Eric and I shared ostrich and springbok (like antelope). Although the atmosphere is very upscale, and the menu lends high expectations, our group experienced several problems with our meals (particularly overcooking). Good wine menu though, and Eric chose a really nice pinotage for us.

There is a nice little Italian place down the road from where I live, called Andiamo. I think I liked the food better because I liked my waiter, Ockert, but if you’re in the mood for Italian, it’s not terrible.

As far as night life goes, the place we frequent the most is this interesting

little café/nightclub called Cubana, which doubles as a hookah bar and a techno venue. It’s just at the bottom of the hill from where all of us live, so it’s convenient, and the drinks fairly inexpensive, but you have to go with a bigger group if you’re going to have any fun.

The best place we’ve been to so far was definitely Chrome, a night club on Long Street. On Wednesday nights, Chrome has “student night”, where you pay 50 rand (about $8) cover, and then shots are 1 rand (about 14 cents). A big group of us went last week, and the music was pretty good, the place was crowded, and because we were American, we were offered access to the VIP lounge.

I hope that everybody back home is doing well, and keep the comments coming. I really appreciate all the feedback! 😊

warthog and all
Wow, warhoge cappacio, what next? Your taste for the exotic even astounds me and I haven't heard anything about your needing Zofran!!! The prices sound good for the person who can drink like a lawyer, so you are in good shape. Hope you are enjoying all the fun, which it certainly sounds like you are, and we can't wait to hear about the penguins, walruses and sharks. Life here is very dull compared to yours. but that is the beauty of being the student and not the old fogey parent. Enjoy.

I miss you Shylie! Gainesville misses you. I wish I was there with you going on your grand adventures; it sounds like such an amazing experience. And, seriously, 14 cent shots NICE!

....That appears to be the main subject you are studying! Interesting culinary descriptions: warthog, Shylie?!?! Andiamo in Italian means 'let's go!"....a popular phrase for tour guides and my favorite word that I picked up during my brief Italian sojourn. Talia hates it when I use it- kind of like Uncle Rob telling any of us to 'hustle up'. Ali had all kinds of problems getting to Israel this week- with any luck she is on her way there now, via Milan. Might make it just under the wire before Shabbat.
