The City From My Window
San Jose, a small caption of its glory. Great city, lots of excellent eateries and outdoor markets. There was a funny little guy outside our hotel that played the ukelele and made "waah" sounds. I got begged for change. It was fun. =P I found someone on my buddy list that had this thing and I thought it would be cool to try to log my travels, both past and future, so friends and family can follow along, even if they can't afford the trip with me. So, without further ado, here are summarized transcripts of a journal I kept the 85 days I spent in Costa Rica. Enjoy! The flight took off without a hitch, and we were all in coach: Tom, my advisor, myself, and two other kids, John and Ted. Halfway through the flight and that Topher Grace movie, we got summoned (by the Headmaster Flight Attendant herself) to the First Class cabin. All we were told was that some seats opened up and we could take them. Good, right?
So we went, and humbly accepted the cooked meals, free drinks, snacks, and everything for a while (and free headphones-- 5$ is a ripoff kiddies,
always bring your own). Then we were told the real reason: there was an indirect threat to the plane. Yup, we were "hired goons" of sorts. The rest of that flight went smoothly, but felt strangely, as we contemplated potential herodom.
Anyways we touched down in San Jose around 1PM and headed for the hotel La Gran Via. It was my first time in another country and I recall seeing a Burger King and Wendys. (W o n d e r f u l). We stayed the night and drank and smoked cubans and walked the streets and ate local food and it was awesome. The next day, we headed out to El Zota, the research station I would soon call home for the next 79 days...
