We decided to leave Airlie Beach on Thursday 24th May, the same day we went on the boat trip to the Whitsunday Islands. We showered; did I mention we’d been sneaking into a hostel to use their showers? We’ll we’ve been stopping in the van in the marina car park, along with one or 2 other vans (even though it says no camping), what’s the point in paying between $20-$30 per night for a site, when all we have to do is drive for 30mins all leave engine running for 1hour to have enough power for lights and fridge, go to the petrol station to top up the water for the sink and sneak into a hostel for a shower! Anyway we set off about 8.30pm, no idea where we were going we just drove for a couple of hours and stopped in a town called Mackay.

Now Nicole thought she’d found us a nice quiet spot for the night on the road near the marina. Well it was quiet at 11pm when we parked up, but in the morning I swear to

god we could’ve been on the freeway!!!

As we were up early because of the traffic we decided to check out the beach for a few hours, but we got lost trying to find it. We drove for 30 minutes until we realised that the beach was only 5 minutes from where we’d spent the night, makes sense when we’d parked near the marina!!! The next few hours involved chilling in a park next to the beach (it was very windy on the beach and the park was sheltered), then we hit the road again. Next stop a Very small town called Agnes Water.

Now all through this road trip there have been signs on the road warning of kangaroos and koalas. We’d seen a few dead kangaroos, but nothing living, so we decided that the dead kangaroos had been planted there to make travellers believe that they really lived in the wild and not just in the zoos….ok we’ve been on the road for some time, you start to talk rubbish. But then suddenly there it was just hopping along at the side of the road, a real live kangaroo, you should’ve heard us squeal with excitement.

Maybe it’s just the koalas that don’t really exist!!!

After about 8 hours we arrived in Agnes Water, it was pretty late, so we ate then slept. In the morning the weather was pretty bad (raining) so we just chilled in the van waiting for the weather to clear, whilst watching all the surfers arriving at the beach. Well we spent the night in the beach car park, so watching the surfers wax down their boards was the best pastime available. The rain eventually stopped, so I wandered onto the beach to watch the surfers in action…pretty awesome, can’t wait to learn. We then decided to hit the next town, Town of 1770, where we found a secluded beach and once again chilled until the rain returned, we then hit the road again heading for Hervey Bay.

En route to Hervey Bay we stopped at Bundaberg, where they make the rum. We just chilled on the high street and had a cuppa in the van, much to the amusement of the passers by. Then we hit Hervey Bay found ourselves a nice little car park next to the beach to set up for the night. We are going

to treat ourselves to a campsite tomorrow as we haven’t showered since Airlie Beach….Nice! The reality of cruising in a campervan!
