Hello all,

Well we got to KL Monday afternoon and were dropped off right in the middle of the city. After working our way past all the touts ( it was like moses and the parting of the red sea ) we went straight to Chinatown to find digs. Due to the lazy gene in us both we settled for the first backpackers we got to. The bathroom and toilets were communal and pretty bad but the room was clean enough and had aircon. They also had a couple of chill out zones with 100+ copied DVD movies and cheapish beer. First stop, the Menara tower. This is the best place in KL to get a 360 degree view of the city from hundreds of metres up. After doing that and taking the rush hour mono rail back to Chinatown we relaxed in the hostel with a couple of beers and then went out for dinner. We got lost trying to find where we wanted to have dinner and in the end wandered into an Indian restaurant called the banana leaf. Due to communication issues we left ourselves in the hands of the owner and we ended up with an unusual meal of various meats, sauces and rice of which we had no real idea of what it was served on a giant banana leaf. No plates, no forks, nothing, just your fingers. Actually really enjoyed it and luckily for us it was all mild spices. The next day we went to the Batu caves. These are sacred caves that the Hindus make an annual pilgramage to in their millions at the beginning of each year. But at this time of year there is a hand full of Indians and a fair few tourists. There are monkeys running around everywhere which are quite amusing but all we kept thinking about was 'we left our rabies shot to save $300' 😊 In the afternoon we went to the Petronas towers. Previously the tallest building in the world until Taipai built some monster. We couldn't go up the towers but we did wander around the 6 + levels of shopping centre underneath. All the famous names are here and it looks like the place the rich Malay and expats shop. Something you will do a lot in this climate is visit shopping centres to escape the heat, humidity or tropical rain. We actually felt quite worn out by this time due to the previously mentioned weather so we decided to be really lazy ( and western ) and ended up in the cinema complex watching 'Next' with popcorn and coke. It was even a very entertaining movie and I give it 4/5 stars 😊 Do I have a career in reviewing films or do I need to write more than that ?.......... Today ( Wednesday ) we left KL and recently arrived in the Cameron Highlands or more specifically in the town of Tanah Rata. Both of us are 'asian megacity' worn out and this place is the perfect antidote. Its up around cloud level and beyond with mountains covered in thick jungle and tea plantations. It took 2 hours to reach the base from KL and then 2 more hours to scale the hairpin road up to the town. Straight out of a movie we had ravines and sheer drops right next to the road, waterfalls and huge green vegetation. At this altitute it is very cool here and the hostel we are in is very very clean and tidy. We even get a western toilet but still no paper, just the high powered hose. We had booked a full day tour tomorrow which takes in one of the tea plantations, jungle treks, swimming etc etc.

So thats you up to date. I forgot to mention in my last blog that my mobile is not working again ( it didn't in Bali a few years ago ). Optus said I had roaming but evidently I don't as I have no signal at all. If you need to contact me then use the message service thats part of my blogs.

Hola Brett (and Nicki if you read these), sounds like you're having a muchos grande time Hodgie :) Wish I was there. Do they have a towel along with the hose in the toilet, or do you air dry? Keep up the blogs, they are most enjoyable. Hasta luego, Terry.

Sigh
I sit here in my sad office cubicle and receive these torturous messages from friends in faraway lands having beer and travels and monkeying around with real monkeys no less! It's terribly cruel.
