There’s something inherently unpredictable when catching up with uni mates. No matter how respectable individual lives may now seem, it often doesn’t take much for things to slide back into an underworld of cheap thrills and expensive nights. Pete, Hamish, Jon and I converged on the Isle of Skye, and I think we fairly successfully proved that the whole can be significantly less than the sum of it’s parts - particularly when The Whole is confined to a barren island in the Atlantic Ocean with little but a few fishermen and one of the best whiskey distilleries in the world.
We covered far more than our fair share of the publican’s wages throughout the weekend - I can quite honestly say I’ve never spent so much at a bar, but hey, if it’s gonna happen, it may as well be here.
The Tallisker distillery is on the island, which is connected to mainland Scotland with a beautifully impressive bridge. The primary industry on the island is fishing (I think), and fishing boats and yachts use the narrow strait behind the island to take shelter from the bitterly cold northern weather.. The harshness of the environment is pretty evident all
Things here promise so much...
Pete, Hamish and Jon inspecting some exceptional British food :) over the barren landscape, not least in the few people that choose to live in such a beautiful spot.
After the long weekend, Sunday saw us scatter across the UK again. Lucky for me, I had the Monday back at work before heading back to Poland for a long overdue visit.
I’m getting quite addicted to Eastern Europe.. Living in the UK I feel like I’m in a world where everything’s generically gold plated and diamante embossed.. things here are expensive, and while they may promise a lot, stuff's well.. tacky. Just over the fence people are hangin’ out in an empty lot drinking beers on an old couch and enjoying the sun. Of course Eastern Europe's got it's downsides; low wages, corruption, and ridiculous languages.. but the rawness and diversity of the contemporary culture is great, and the history is so recent and real! .. The beer's not bad either!
Spending a week in the sunny 25deg Spring weather with Asia was a great break. We didn't get up to a lot, but it was great to step back into her world for a while. On the last night we went out to a friend of
Reminders of WWII
In an apartment building accross the road from Asia's local mall. It may sound strange, but seeing the pits strafed accross the building and concentrated round the doors and windows in such an innocuous location really bought the crazy situation home to me. a friend's birthday - in a park - with a huge PA - and some of the best DnB tracks I've heard for a long time. It was hard to leave, but them's the breaks.
I've got a few of week's work now, then Ma and Pa turn up for two weeks. They'll be travelling round Scotland, and I'm dragging them over to Krakow for a weekend - can't wait 😉 Summer's on the way, hopefully things are looking up and I feel like writing more regularly!
