I figured if I was coming all the way to Finland, I might as well go to Estonia. For many, its an easy day trip that takes anywhere from 1 1/2 hours on a hydrofoil boat or 3 hours on a cruise type ferry. I think there are a fair number of Finnish people who enjoy making this trip for the cheap cigarettes and well, duty-free alcohol available here. I was relieved to find that the prices are similar to canadian standards. A good bench mark is always Mcdonalds and five dollars cdn will get you an extra value meal here in Tallinn.
After a rainy and grey welcome to Estonia, I spent most of the day wandering around the very touristy old town. This is a unesco heritage site recognizing the well preserved medieval character of this area. It is home to many craft guilds that preserve traditional forms of Estonian craftsmanship including ceramics, stained glass and textiles. The shops are a housewife's dream as many of the shops carry great linen tablecloths, clothing and wool handicrafts. The old town seems to also be a one-stop souvenir shop for everything Baltic the shops also carry amber and the famous nesting russian dolls. I wasn't aware previously that the dolls were a characteristic handicraft of Estonia or are they? The dolls have received a modern update and now some sport the image of Stalin, Osama Bin Laden or even, George Bush. You could get your very own George Bush times six in descending size for your personal collection.

The dolls are Russian. And amber isn't estonian either. More Latvian.
