Heart starters and memorable moments

A few moments in time that I will remeber......

1. Realizing my Ipod is dead and I am now going to be subjected to 5 months of traditional pan flute music, Bob Marley, Beyonce, Shakira and raggatone.

2. Running off a mountain with a heavy bloke and a parachute strapped to my back. Tripping over at the last minute and being dragged along the rocks until finally a gust of wind lifted me and the angry bloke up into the air. He was pissed about the gouge in his brand new knee pads. I was pissed about the gouge in my leg!

3. Heading downhill flat out over rocky unpaved roads on a mountain bike in the back country of Pucon (after getting lost trying to find the volcano!) The brakes didn´t work, the gears got stuck and the chain came off. Fortunately I was laughing so hard I fell into the bushes and escaped any serious injury.

4. Spending a freezing night in a hotel in the middle of the Uyuni desert where everything is made of salt (we know because we licked it) at minus 15 degrees with no electricity pathetic blankets. Probably as close to sleeping in the freezer as I would like to get.

5. Watching with a sickening feeling as my backpack rolled down the hill and fell off the ledge of the deepest canyon in the world. Fortunately it landed on a ledge not too far below and a courageous kiwi rescued it for me. Phew.

6. Catching a cab from the airport and being left in it (with all my gear), motor running, while the driver dropped off some contraband to an apartment in the back streets of Quito. Even though I can´t drive, I was contemplating doing a runner with the cab to avoid being mugged. Surely my driving can´t be any worse than theirs!

7. Realising we were late for the last bus out of Puente Del Inca and attempting to run to catch it, forgetting that you can´t run at 3000m altitude, particularly after a bottle of wine, and consequently are left gasping like a fish out of water to the incredible amusement of the locals and the bus driver who almost choked to death laughing at us.

8. Fooling about on what we thought was a disused track at the train graveyard in Uyuni. And then a train came.

9. Hiking the Sacred Valley with a sensational hangover and a sleep count of zero. I thought it was a bus trip, not a 5 hour walking excursion......up hill.

10. Hiking to the lookout in Rurrenebeque with the best in Bolivian safety standards (i.e nothing) to stop you from plunging hundreds of meters to your death off the narrow path. Don´t worry, we survived and the view was amazing.

11. Walking in to a church that was too dark for my eyes and sitting on an old man by mistake. He didn´t seem to mind too much and probably thought his prayers to God had been answered.

12. Visiting a Shaman in Peru for 12 hours. An intense ceremony involving drinking the sacred Iowaska, undergoing a cleansing with rabbit juice and rose petals, partaking in vibrational and hands on healing and having my eyeballs licked to remove the disease! Not for the faint hearted.

13. Trying to think on my feet and avoid the advances of a would be suiter I responded to the questions of ´what´s your name and where are you from´ with ´Sarah from
