So i arrive finally in sydney with 6 days left to spare. I have to say i was very impressed with this place and it would be a great place to live. Sydeny is a very nice city and the bridge and harbour are very impressive. Its very diverse and each area of the city is different from the next. I also visited Bondi and Manly beaches. Bondi wasnt as impressive as its reputation but i suppose its the place to go if you like surfing. But the first day i went it was raining so i suppose thats why it was a bit crap. Manly was actually a much nicer beach and town i thought. I stayed in Kingcross which is where alot of the backpackers stayed, it had alot of bars and clubs surprise surprise but was also a bit dodgy with alot of dumbs and druggies too. But the street was safe with a heavy police presence. At one stage within 20 meters i walked passed men, a druggie lying on the floor, 2 buisness, an alco, 2 policemen a hooker and 4 nuns.....it was that kinda place.
But i didnt have much time for relaxing here as every night i had to meet someone new to say hello to. First i had to meet up with the sister and Anthony Hughes who is an old family friend who moved to australia in the 70s. He is now a professor at the university and doing very well for himself. He brought us out for a meal in a very nice Italian restaurant and we all had a great night chatting away, so thanks very much for that Anthony. Every evening after that i was booked out.....i met Kieth McGirl an old work colleague, Colin McBride from donegal who i met at Ayres rock, Katrina from syndey who i met in Sapa Vietnam, Nicholas from sydney who i met in Loas and also vietnam(cheers again for the bbq mate!) and the Danish guys from Airlie beach(who i was to see alot more of) . Every night was spent catching up on stories and of course having a few beers.
Ireland were also playing wales and slovakia that week so the nights were very very late when they played. I headed with Colin to an irish bar in kingscross to catch the wales game. There was a fair crowd of irish there but not as many as we expected. The crowd got smaller as kick off approached and with about 10 minutes before the game kicked off a man of the cloth (slighlty drunken to say the least) walked in and stood right beside us. He said his name was a Father D. McGuire. Well you could imagine our delight!! We were fairly oiled up ourselves and we had a great auld conversation with him mostly about football and the irish team, but i tell ya everything he said even when deadly serious i nearly pissed myself laughing.... the man is just funny in everything he says and does(for those who dont know Father D McGuire, he is a character on TV played by Aardel O Hanlon a very famous irish comedian this guy is just hilarious) and i told him he was the funniest man to come out of carrickmccross in the last 10 years which he seemed more pleased with than any award he has ever got.....eh not! He was great craic and a pleasure to meet. That was a memorable night and Ireland actually won too!!!
I spent my last day in Oz back at bondi beach with Charlotte from Canada who i met the day before. It was a warm day and a great way to spend my last day in oz. Australia was a really nice country and i can see why some people love it. I have to say sydney was by far the best city and i liked it there alot. I dunno if id live in australia but im pretty sure ill be back to visit it again some day.
