Vancouver
Our first night in Vancouver was in a lovely new hostel located on top of a booming bar fit snugly between adult stores and greasy pizza places. At least the pizza was good.
After checking out in the morning and lugging our bags down to the ferry terminal we discovered that Canadians are almost as paranoid as Americans. Because of the threat of terrorism they did not offer a single site for luggage storage and we spent the day being "true backpackers".
Stanley Park, adjacent to the city, has endless things to see and do. We discovered that the "endless" part refers mainly to the lack of signange and criss-crossing roads. David saw his first squirrel, and Nicola found his cooing very amusing. David would like to point out that squirrels are
very cool.
Vancouver Island
We had more hostel fun in Victoria, this time in the form of a slab of concrete disguised as a bed. The city is very picturesque, with a lovely seafront and parliament buildings.
We then journeyed North West to Tofino where we went hunting for black bears and Dave managed to get a few good shots off - see below.
That afternoon we took another trip on a zodiac and went whale watching out of Ucluelet. We didn't see any of the Orcas that were pictured everywhere, but managed to catch a couple of glimpes of grey whales and sea lions.
Trip to Calgary
Greyhound were kind enough to offer David 18 hours of hell on a bus travelling from Vancouver to Calgary. Nicola on the other hand opted for the 17 hours, 40 minutes of sleep and 20 minutes of snacking option.
