Well the last 7 days have been filled up with a lot. We were in Laos until the 22nd, we visited 4 towns and logged 46 hours in buses traveling from town to town. We went to Phonsavan from Luang Prabang, there we got see the Plain of Jars. These Jars are old but no one knows the age of them, these we dragged from a quarry 30 KMs away and carved on the hill tops way before the industrial revolution. Laos has a lot of craters visible even after 30 years and every one seem to have a collection of bomb casings, some as large as me.
We headed off to Xam Neua, and had a great day at the caves that the Pathet Lao had hid in during the bombing done by the CIA. We saw caves that housed the big wigs each had a cave of their own, a hospital cave, and the army cave that housed a round 2000 Lao and Vietnamese soldiers. We had a great guide and fun fellow travelers on this tour.
The next day we traveled for 11 hours on a bus that has been serving the country since the war.. Even great warriors like this bus should retire. It had rusted out and cracked supports in the rear of the bus, maybe this is a requirement in Lao for a bus to carry 6 tons on the roof.. I'm not lying they had a Scooter up there and that was the light part of the load. When we board the bus in Xam Neua it was not even half full, by about 6 hours into the trip, we had loaded up the bus with more on the roof and had passengers siting in the aisle. The good news is we had a couple flats on the way, so that gave a chance to stretch.
We didn't get much time in Nong Khiaow which is to bad, it's in a really nice setting... Off to Udomxai which is about 4 hours from the boarder of China. Great scenery on the ride, that is best described as bone shattering.
Now we are in China, and trying to see as much of Yunnan province before the May holiday starts.. which we will be in Hong Kong and Guangzhou for. Well we are back on a bus in 2 hours for a 16 hours trip, wish us luck. Buy the way Chinese love to smoke.. I'm choking as I type. Also WTF Canucks and the Stars are tied up. Come on Canucks just score a couple goals.
Cheers John
