Easter in Valdivia

Our next stop was Valdivia, a smallish city overlooking the river. We only had a day or so here but again we were blessed with good weather and we set off another walking tour.

Not far from our hostel we came across the local market specialising in fresh produce and fish - they are big on salmon, sea bass, mussels and clams.

The place was amazing, it felt like every local in the city were out on Saturday morning to get the goodies for Easter weekend. The size of some of the fish was incredible, am not sure what size ovens these people must have to cook them!

As well as the people, the local sea-lions had cottoned on to the fact, and swam patiently in the river just behind the men and women cleaning, gutting and beheading the fish for their customers. It was quite a display to see them so lazily swimming or lazing in the sun, and then coming up for a feed!!

That evening we were walking back along the river to our hostel, and am not joking, at least 20 of the massive things had decided to come up and make their bed on the pathway underneath the trees!! We crossed the road to give them a wide berth. A few other tourists tried to show their bravado by getting up close, but on opening an eye and making a huge roar the sea lions showed who was the boss-man!!!

They clearly didn´t seem to be keen on making friends, having their space to catch up on their beauty sleep was Priority No. 1...
