Glasgow
Shane's new business Ah, bonnie Scotland! The land of fresh air, open spaces, sheep, phone boxes in the in middle of nowhere & really loud military fighter jets that appear when you least expect them!!
When the fog cleared from the horizon and our heads, we arrived at Edinburgh airport in better condition than we arrived at Luton airport (London). We picked up our hire car and headed towards Glasgow to meet up with Niki. The countryside is very green and lush. We were pretty tired by the time we arrived at Niki's as we only had 3 hours sleep before getting on the plane but nevertheless we pushed on (still better than work). After watching the National Grand Steeple we went on an unofficial tour of Glasgow care of guide Paul. We are not sure if he breathes but he was a great source of information. There are a lot of very old buildings and also a great selection of pubs. We think the entire drinking age population of Glasgow was out which made for great drinking and spectating, it's a great accent! We also managedto catch up with some of my (Shane) ancestors who are now in the business
of undertaking. We had some late night goodies (deep fried, of course), Eve fell over (what's new- but saved the food) and were off for the night, exhausted.
Sunday (15th) was a leisurely day with a drive down south of Glasgow to Ayr. We visited a castle ruin, one spectacular castle and electric brae. For those not in the know (as we weren't), the EB is an optical illusion and looks like the road is going downhill when in actual fact it's uphill. So, we pushed the car uphill, had a laugh and then some haggis in a little town not far from there (and a couple of pimts as well).
Monday was a day filled with expectations and excitement as we headed into The Highlands. The spectacular nature of the Highlands is something else and as we watched the temp drop (snow on the nearby hills), the hills grew and we felt more relaxed. It's difficult to describe the Highlands so I won't. If you haven't been there, you just have to see it for yourself! We saw a 13th century castle ruin and stayed at Mallaig (a little fishing town just south of the Isle of
South of Glasgow
Niki & Evonne at Culzean Castle Skye).
After a cold ferry channel crossing to Skye, we drove the car down to the bottom tip of the island and how's the serenity.... We drove around Skye to the north where we could see the northern islands and the old man of storr. Then from there we drove to Pitlochary.
Not after Shane's super effort and excellent driving through the highlands. Amazing.
We check in to our B&B (recommended by Shane Daniel), then headed off to the Moulin Hotel (circa 1695) for some haggis & beer by a lovely warm fire. Nice... Then took some happy snaps on the way home.
On the Wednesday (17th April) we drove to Edinburgh. Driving through the lovely & most times peaceful countryside we encounted two massive fighter jets that flew over us. Scared the crap out of me (Evonne). We stopped off at the William Wallace momument in Stirling. After a quick & intense stop in Edinburgh (we had only an hour to see the main sights & we drove in peak hour traffic to the airport with little road signs) we boarded our flight to Amsterdam.
