Beautiful oak trees...there were live oaks all over that preserve the battle area. This past Easter weekend involved a little historical trip to Fort Fisher here in North Carolina. As most know, the South played a big role in the Civil War. About 12 miles from Wilmington is a small fort known as Fort Fisher that served as a mainland supply route for goods to the Confederate army and Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. After a large battle in January of 1865, the loss of the route made it impossible for the Confederate army to succeed in the war.
During our visit, we saw the cannon on top of a small mound called Shepherd's Battery. There is also a bomb shelter underneath the mounds that has been closed off. And during our little outing, you could just imagine the battles that took place at this amazing spot and how many men may have fallen for what they believed in. It was a nice glimpse of history and showed me a little more about the rich culture down in the south. We also got to see a LARGE white crane hanging out in the marsh but it was a little too far away to snap a photo of.
The best
part about the area was the live oaks that were just gorgeous. Most of the area was sectioned off so that the forest could be preserved and the bomb shelter beneath the mounds wouldn't be destroyed. Looking out over the area, you realize that although their (Confederate army) intentions may not have been for the right purpose (aka...accepting slavery and thinking that Mr. Abe was a "negro-lover") you still have to admire their dedication. America is the land of the free and they defended their beliefs. Even if I don't agree with them, I still admire their courage, their pursuit for their own beliefs, and their courage to sacrifice everything for a "cause". Confederate soldiers that fell at Fort Fisher...may you rest in peace...

Beliefs
I admire you for taking the time to admire history. Although I don't agree with their beliefs; I do however agree with you- they were fighting for a "cause". I wish there were more people like this these days. Thanks so much for sharing this with me. It is awesome!
