Wellington exceeded all expectations. It is the first place in New Zealand that we really enjoyed all aspects of. Even the people were friendly!

We stayed with Clare and Simon, friends of ours (the Goldsack's) from long ago camping in Pembrokeshire. They were fantastic, giving us the entire downstairs flat, complete with a real bed (bliss!), a shower room and kitchenette. They even met us to show us they way to their house, fed us, and made maps to show us where to go.

The city looks green, a strange change for a city (welcome to NZ! A town is where there are more than 2 people!). We had great views from the motorway across the water as we drove in (yes, more than one lane of traffic each way!). It is very hilly and can be very windy, but is a very pretty city, with lots of artwork and public spaces.

We went to Te Papa Tongeriwa (sp.?), the National Museum, an eclectic collection of Maori and European-style NZ culture, in a huge range of exhibits. They even had a fake cave with not-so-realistic gloworms. Very educational, interesting, and too much really for one day only. Even the food was reasonably priced, and entrance free, so all-in-all a must-do place for anyone heading this way. Thanks Fiona for the tip.

Clare tipped us off to visit Cuba St, a great little stretch of not so run-of-the-mill shops. I got the bikini I have been looking out for for ages- one to go with everything! (I realise only girls will understand the importance of this!)

All in all a great little city, with very welcoming hosts.
