Sea Lions!
They're very noisy and they smell BAD but aren't they cute! We've now just left Puerto Madryn where we spent 3 days amongst some pretty amazing wildlife and not a whole lot more! We got into Puerto Madryn EARLY in the morning and hopped straight on the bus to Puerto Piramides (a tiny village on the Valdes Peninsula where only 300 people live and probably double that number of penguins)! We met an Israeli couple (Yael and Hagay) on the bus and spent the next few days exploring the local area with them. We hired a man and his 4x4 to take us up the coast to where you can see all the wildlife. I sat in the front and tried my crap Spanish out on him and we managed to half quite a convincing conversation even if i did do a lot of nodding and smiling (every language student's favourite technique)! We went to see some penguins and we got really close which was amazing - we managed to bore our new friends senseless with our endless photo taking. Next we saw elephant seals, but from really far away - according to Simon though they could kill me as soon as look at me so maybe that was for the best
eh?! We also went to see some massively noisy sea lions and waited patiently for an Orca to come and eat the baby ones straight off the beach. Apparently they only do this here and although Simon was dying to see it, i have to confess that i was quite content just to watch them play in the water - cute, fluffy and in one piece!
Puerto Piramides is such a small place that there is only one bus which connects it to the mainland and that leaves at 7pm. So the only option left open to us on our last day at midday was to try and hitch-hike - not something either of us have tried before! Yael and Hagay got a lift first and we them stayed at the side of the road trying to look as attractive as possible for the next hour but to no avail. Lunch and beer seemed like a much better idea than staying out on a dusty road for god knows how long, so we retreated to find beer and got on the 7pm bus! Next time i'm going to have to get Simon in a bikini shaking his stuff for
More sea lions
We took this photo through big binoculars all he's worth, maybe then we'll have more luck hitch-hiking! (Oooh, bearded bikini babe...dont know about that - Si)
Due to our inability to hitch-hike we ended up in Puerto Madryn (a town on the mainland) for a night before we could head further south. We decided to opt for a late bus and we hired a car for a day with Yael and Hagay. We went down the coast to Punta Tombo where the largest penguin colony outside Antartica live. They've all made their nests on the shore in bushes and holes on the plains. It's amazing to see and we took loads of photos which we'll soon put on the blog. You can get really close to the penguins and Simon got told off for being too close when he had his macro lens shoved up some poor penguin's nose!! (It wasn't that close really - I couldn't see its nostril hairs or anything! and it really didn't seem to care - didn't even bat an eyelid the cute little bugger!)
We're now in a place in the middle of nowhere on our way to the end of the world, Ushuaia (apparently the southernmost city in
the world). We'll let you know what it's like and how many enormous mountains Simon's made me climb!! Lots of love to all xxxxx
