July 13th-Laura´s

Today consisted of mainly relaxing, in fact it was in all a very relaxing and beautiful day! to start off the day me an dom decided that as we were only a stones throw from paradise we should start our day of with a jog along the beach...hahaha okay we sunbathed and paddled in the water but it was amazing...yet i hate to admit this (don´t laugh Claire) my tan is yet to be seen! Crazy i know, maybe its because i´ve been wearing, and forcing Dom to wear, factor 50?!, but there is some sign of tanning, i mean my freckles have come out with avengence!
so after relaxing on paradise, i mean the beach we headed back to Robby´s... Dom obviously decided he didnt want to go in as he wouldnt open the door for us! i know, hes mean! so after FORCING us to go to the supermarket he finally opend the door...by pushing it!!!
Once again we decided to make the most of Robby´s knowlege of Rio and he took us to some mumbo jumbo modern art museum...full of eggs and bricks! humm.
but the buiding, was like a UFO! it was amazing and gave a panaramic view of, well just about everything. The one thing i cannot get my head around are the views, they are abosolutly amazing, everywhere you turn there is something to take your breath away!
Its very different here to how i imagined, i though walking the streets at night would terrify me, but i love it here, its like a home from home! its amazing! I can´t believe we have to leave on Monday!
But anyway after the museum guess what, thats right more Caipirinhas!! oh yeah! and what ever Dom says dont beleive him... i was not drunk. i wasnt! it was very stong though (and claire hope your proud of yourself, i cant get away from cocktails, not even here!)
a ferry ride across the bay, Unmissable! it was the best way by far to everything!
Another unmissable...*drools* Robby introduced us to a ¨street treat ¨a pancake type sausage with either butterscotch or chocolate pummed into it before your very eyes, and no i´m not craving another already...on that note i´ll write soon!

13th July - Dom´s version

Almost 12 hours sleep last night! We woke up at 7am, and now at 7pm we are exhausted again. This morning we walked to the beach, sunbathed and drank more coconut milk. We waded in the sea and watched some young, fit Brazilians jog around the beach, and some old fat Brazilians try not to look embarrased.
Heading back around midday we found we couldn´t open Robby´s door with our keys. Feeling silly we went and bought some dinner, and on our return found that all the door needed was a good push. Silly us, or rather me. Laura became decidedly and understandably annoyed with me, especially after I admitted I couldn´t find 250 of our Reals (They´re SOMEWHERE in our room). She is now bursar.
We planned some of the Brazil portion of our trip, when we got in, changing it quite dramatically. In any case, it doesn´t look like we´ll make it all the way up to Columbia in our ten weeks, as we´re going further South than we originally intended, though still hope to take in the Pantanal at a later date. The plan now includes Paraguay, though if we can take Spanish lessons there is anyone´s guess, as it is their second language.
Anyway, in the afternoon Robby took us to a city on the other side of the bay, called Niteroi, where we took a tour of the Contemporary Art Museum, designed by Oscar Niemeyer (anyone know who that is?). The building was amazing, the art... modern; bricks with ¨Repieter¨ stamped on them, by the hundred, and terracotta eggs in wire baskets... nuts. Views from the building (of the bay and surrounding isands) were amazing.
Robby took us to sit by the sea and drink beer and Laura´s new favourite drink. She only had one, but it was so strong that she couldn´t walk straight.
Robby says that the best seafood in Brazil is served in Niteroi, but we didn´t eat there. Instead we took the ferry back to Rio - a lovely way to see the islands and bay. I asked Robby about something he has said yesterday; that ¨in Brazil there is not that link between rich country and rich people¨
¨Why is that?¨ I asked.
¨Two reasons - corruption and America. Is America said no more Brazil debt, people here maybe live better¨
Robby also told us that he had worked for Shell oil before he lost his job, and was married until 3 years ago. He´s 38.
He tells us that his aspiration is to be number one Rio hostel for Bristolians. We taught him how to say ¨gert lush¨, and ¨How bist you?¨. He loved it. Apparently the first two people who stayed at his flat were from Bristol.
From the centre we took the subway, and Robby indtroduced us to a local street snack unique to Rio - a kind of cinnamon covered pancake sausage filled with chocolate or butterscotch*, bought from popcorn sellers. Also available on the streets is sweetcorn on the cob, hotdogs, coconuts of course, lots of sweets, toys and clothing accessories, and what looks like street gambling. Also to be found everywhere are dogs (of the canine variety). ¨Over 7 million people in Rio and 200,00 dogs¨ - Robby

*We are now addicted.
