The Big Trip

We were pleasantly surprised by the 18 hour overnight bus ride from Iguazu Falls to Buenos Aires. After clearing customs and travelling for a couple of hours, we had a moment of confusion during a vehicle changeover. All of this was put aside when we realised there was a three course meal included in the ticket price along with red wine.....and champagne!! Not only that, but the chairs were wide enough for two people and extended right back, so it was more like travelling in business class, and much preferable to some flights we have endured. There were even films in English, so rock on South American bus travel!

On our first wedding anniversary (well one month) at 7am, slightly bleary eyed, we found ourselves stumbling off the bus in Buenos Aires, the city that never sleeps. We have been here for three days now, soaking up tango lessons on the roof terrace, local wine and delicious cuts of steak. We saw Eva Perons grave at a very strange cemetery which is kind of like a city of the dead. We went to a football game (non football fans please see note at bottem of entry), and took in a tango show to see how the professional Argentineans dance (very bloody well). So it has been action packed as ever.

We were feeling a bit beached out after Brazil, so skipped Florianopolis and arrived in Argentina a week early. This put us in a state of confusion as to how to spend the next 5 weeks with the additional time and a million and one different options, so we sought the advice of some other travellers and have had our heads in the Lonely Planet for the last couple of days. The unanimous decision is...... to head to Mendoza and drink copious amounts of wine for four days. As you can imagine that decision was a hard one. We have decided to use the extra week in Chile to go south to Patagonia for some more trekking and an awesome looking boat trip through the fjords in one of the National Parks.

Some fantastic news this week too - Sonia and Fraser have decided to join us on the Inca trail, so we will see them in 6 weeks in Peru - hooray!

How is our Spanish coming along I am sure you must all be wondering...(not). Quite badly actually, but we are managing to get by with hand signals and the point book. The food and beverages both in Argentina and Brazil have exceeded expectations, and both countries have been reasonably cheap to get around, although we are told Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador are even cheaper.

Send us some news!! Whats been happening where you are?

Love Cal and Nic

*Important note for non football fans: Football is just as boring in South America as it was in Europe. If you don't really like football, it is probably not worth spending loads of cash going to a game in Buenos Aires as you will probably end up meeting other people that actually like football at the game. You will then probably end up going out for a meal with these people, or worse, travelling with them for some weeks, and all they will probably talk about is football!!!!! On the other hand if you like watching people kick balls around a field like Callum and most of the rest of the world you will probably have a great night out and love it. Thats all from me!!

Dullsville
What can we possibly have to say that can match the colour of your stories. You are leaving us all depressed and drooling. Not only does everything you show and tell us make it seem like we have never lived at all, but now I want to travel with you. You two really know how to travel and do and see it all as if you belong to the cultures. You do stuff, you don't just talk about it. I can't believe you fit in dancing classes and anything else you can get at. Most of us spend hours assessing what's available and then doing stuff all about it! Second thoughts, who needs to go on holiday when we've got you two bringing everything right into our homes. All we need to do is close our eyes and pretend we're there. Life here is very ordinary but thanks for asking. Keep up the travel diaries they are wonderful. Lots of Love
