Sydney to Surf Camp
Leaving Edd to enjoy the thrills of Queenstown I spent a rather boring day on a plane before being reunited with the girlies in Sydney. Disapointedly it was raining when I arrived- not what i came to Australia for!
We spent the first day together going to Taronga Zoo as it was one of the few things the others hadnt done already. they ferry ride there gave impressive views of the harbour and the city- even if it did look a bit grey. The zoo was alot of fun with everything you'd expect: kangaroos, wallabys and koalas and a very entertaining seal show. The weather even brighten up enough to have a ice cream at the end of the day.
We spent the night in the hostel bar unexpectedly with Dan and Tom (friends from school we hadn't seen in 6 months). Unfortunately a good night resulted in a big panic the next morning when we woke up just 15 mins before our bus left and we hadn't packed! After the most chaotic 15 mins of my life we somehow made it to the bus on time although we did manage to wake everyone else in our room
up (at 6am) and leave a few things behind. We are doing the 'Oz Experience' bus trip, a student orientated, semi organised tour of the east coast.
Our first stop was 'Surf Camp' in the little town of Arrawarra, 7 hours from Sydney. The highlight of the journey was when the girl sat infront of me (not naming names, but it was Laura) threw up out the window all down the side of the bus. My view of the coast was blurred by lumps of last nights dinner for the rest of the journey!
We arrived at the camp a few hours later and our very sterotypical instructor ran us through the bascis, punctuated by a few too many 'sweet' and 'dudes'. When we got in the water it was nice and warm andthe waves were realy good, perfect for begginers. We all had fun and Laws and Jen, who'd never done it before, both managed to stand up. After about an hour in the water i looked up from the waves to see a strike of fork lightening above the sea! We didnt stay in long after that!
That night was spent enjoying a free barbie drinking cheap
wine (called goon) and getting to know the others on the trip.
Byron to Brisbane
The next stop was the holiday town of Byron Bay. Its rather like a hugely nicer version of newquay, with one main road leading to the beach. The masses of surf shops consumed a large amount of my money as we spent two days on the beach getting burnt and two nights in 'Cheeky Monkeys' the best (and only) club in town.
From here we said goodbye to the people we'd met as we have significantly less time to do the trip than most and had keep moving. We noticed a big increase in temperature and humidity as we crossed the border into Queensland. We spent a night in 'Surfers paradise'- not as night as it sounds, it a very tacky town with highrise flats right next to the beach. We staying in a lovely hostel where our room had a slightly prison cell feel as the only thing between the beds and the 'en-suite' was and old shower curtain stuck up with masking tape. This was all very well until it fell down- good job we were the only ones in the room!
On a brighter note Surfers was home to Matt for the night we were there so we were able to catch up again. Having decided to have an early night we were then persuaded into 'shooters' bar with the promise of free entry, free drink and free food it was hard to resist.
We left Surfers the next day and headed to Brisbane. Everyone we asked said there wasnt anything to do there so with a whole free day ahead of us we decided to go to the cinema (it was raining after all). We spent a very entertaining night in the 'Down under bar' with some friends we'd met earlier in the trip. It was ladies night so there was free champagne and all sorts of male entertainment, fortunately the crowds protected our eyes from most of it.
We have made an effort to take in some culture on this trip. Jenny and lauren got hands on with the wildlife when a cockroach crawled ovr them in the street and I shared a shower with a lizard last night! We even had a digeridoo lesson yesterday. Or rather the driver pulled over onto a patch of grass,
produced some digeridoos and we all stood around like idiots making rude noises for about 20 minutes until we gave up. None of us girls even managed to get a note out but it was very entertaining.
