My crazy family subscribes to the notion that salt water heals all, so naturally I headed directly for the ocean and stayed for a week.

El Salvador’s coastlines certainly don’t receive the hype, which Costa Rica’s coasts do, so you get to a ponte like El Zonte and it’s just the fisherman, their families, the ocean, and you!

Falling asleep (with only 4 walls separating you from the ocean) to the crashing of waves on the shoreline of your front yard, under a sky glowing with stars, and then bathing in the ocean with the rise of the sun every morning- a que rico!

The family that I stayed with went diving for lobster and fish everyday, so I hiked along the cliffs of the shore by day, ate fresh fish every afternoon, and read until I fell asleep every evening. Sure, there were other more populated “hooked up” pontes about a 2 hour walk away, which I trekked out to when a cash machine or internet were needed, and there was that need to take the bus ride down to La Libertad for groceries, and San Salvador for a re-supply of books and linen pants. But once I found the ocean I found it extremely hard to convince myself that there was any place more important to be.
I started to imagine changing my life completely, a life where I’d live off very little and survive off the oceans resources. Ah, I dream…

Oh, I should mention, that I did try surfing, and um well, perhaps it would have been smarter if I were on more of a beginner’s beach and not on a point break. So, with only one surf lesson (almost 2 years ago) from my brother-in-law under my belt and surfboard under arm, I headed for the waves. Lets just say that I didn’t even make it under the first wave before it overtook me and was soon walking back to the shoreline, limp, bleeding knee and bruised leg. I wasn’t aware of just how rocky the ocean bottom can be.
