The Beach
Don Det Beach, we are staying about 20 metres back from here. Fri 2nd March: Got up arly, Tuk tuk to bus station and got the bus. Well, a converted people carrier open on the back and the sides, crammed full of locals and their shopping apart from us two and 3 hippies. The hippies sound like they are from Isreal, the two men have long hair and long beards, the women has Earth-Mamma goddess hair (probably hairy legs too). They were friendly, but quite bossy to the driver, forcing him to drop us off right at the boat pier, not in the town. So we're at a port, not sure whther to do Don Det or Don Khong, so we chose Don Det.
It's in the 4000 islands region of Laos, right in far south and you can see cambodia across the water. Arrived off our boat and landed on the beach, it's quite nice, all in bikini's here. Found a hotel room, it's a rip-off, but that's okay. We pay about 3 quid each for a double room, with mediocre shower, man-proof toilet (Matt went, felt better - then panickd. There is no flush, in fact no cistern. What to do? There is a bucket and a tap, you wash
Our Bungalow
Our Bungalow, complete with Hammocks. It's like a mini paradise here. it away.), we also have hammocks which are good.
Later we walked around this side of the island up to the French bridge (inferior to British engineering of course). On the bridge we were subject to an attempted mugging. 3 children came up to us and asked for 100 Baht, then 100 Kip. We got away by taking a photo of them and showing it too them.
It seems almost unimaginable that these kids have probably never seen a photograph of themselves, and probably can't afford to own a mirror, and the river moves too fast to afford a refelection - so they have probably never seen themselves. They found looking at themselves on the screen of a camera really funny. Later we went back (on the way we saw 2 snakes, one in the water and one on the path) and had a 'Happy Shake' after dinner. Realised the fan is pointless. Electricity is generator driven here and only works between 7pm and 10pm. Yes, that's right. 3 hours electricity a day.
Sat 3rd March: Got up, meandered a bit, did some sunbathing, then hired 2 tubes. The motorboat took us out to Don Perry about 4km
The Kids
Money-mad monkeys. They tried to mug us. up the river, we got in our tubes (like a giant inner-tube for a tractor wheel sizd bike tyre) and floated down the river. We stopped on a deserted island for a while, then carried on our way. Leanne overshot our landing beach (Good job we weren't relying on her on D-day) and Matt the superhero had to swim out and rescue her. Like in Baywatch. From Don Perry to Don Det
took around 4 hours.
Later we figured it hurt too much. 35 degree sun and no sunscreen. We are both now as red as an orange-man's face. To numb the pain we went to the reggae bar after having another 'happy-shake' at the bar before this. Reggae bar is good, but a bit scary. On the way in a monkey tied to a post kept jumping at us. On the way out, there was no monkey. Just the lead. And it was dark. When we got back to the room we listend to the Live lounge and then it was morning.

no wonder you never have any comments - you just don't bother to put them on the blog - I've sentloads and a big fat zero appeared. people will think you don't read them. must admit it sounds an improvement on other places you've been (loo and electricity rations notwithstanding) remember there are crofts in the wilds of scotland in very much the same position. hope sunburn turns brown but don't worry yp ou can always get a fake tan in aussie
