Doubtful

After driving by myself for a few days, it was quite nice going on a guided tour. There's really no other way to get to Doubtful sound (named so after captain Cook's state of mind when he found them). First they take you on a boat across Manapouri lake. Then, after a quick visit to the hydroelectric power station (see future separate post, maybe), you board a bus that drives you on a road not connected to any other, past the saddle and down to the sound itself. The cruise itself was very pleasant. I went with the smaller company, so we were about 20 people plus one witty guide which was also the bus driver and the skipper for both boats. We had lovely weather, of course, so we cruised all the way out to the Tasman sea. This sound, in contrast to the Milford, is really deserted, which enhance the experience. Saw some penguins from afar and a seal colony, but no dolphins, I'm afraid. All in all, a very pleasant way to pass a day, and a unique experience. Cruising the sounds - not just for old people (although I have been accused of not acting my age).

The heir's ears

Just try to imagine a giant heir just below the horizon, with only the tip of her ears visable. Quite frightning, actually.

Hey, the Hare's Ears look like the Sydney Opera House.
