We'd been hoping to visit the well-known honey pot of Milford Sound after our trek... luckily, Raf had similar intensions and kindly offered us a ride in his ultra-cool 'Bongo' campervan. Cheers Raf if you're reading this- we owe this day to you!
So, with the Kepler track under our belts, we set off on the road from Te Anau to Milford. The road itself was something special... it must be one of the most scenic in NZ, if not internationally. Needless to say there were multiple stopping. After one such pause, it looked as if the Bongo may have 'kicked the bucket', but after a rest... it restarted, much to everyone's relief!
I knew Milford would be small, but for some reason I'd envisaged it as a town. Upon arriving, we discovered that it was in fact 3 buildings! We booked a boat trip for that afternoon, and ate lunch while dosing-up on UV.
The sound itself (a very large Fjord- hence the region 'Fjordland') was stunning. The landscape of the area was truly amazing, and we'd been lucky with the weather too. I think the photos probably speak of this much more than my words can,
Mountains!
En-route to Milford but it really did make an impact. The boat trip was a very blustery experience, with strong winds being funnelled through the mountains. We didn't see dolphins, but there was a seal stop, followed closely by sailing under a waterfall. Everyone else seemed to rush to the dry side of the boat, while myself and Fred did quite the opposite - basking in the tumbling torrents of spray as if possessed by some 'tribal water god'.
We drove back to Te Anau that evening, and cooked a joint meal at the lakeview holiday park. All in all, an excellent day.
