Cairns Lagoon
Man-made lagoon as no swimming due to deadly box jelly fish! Hello all
Well its been a fabulous first two weeks on the road. After about 40 hours of traveling via Singapore and Darwin, Tom and I were both rather hysterical but very happy and excited indeed.
We started off in Cairns and despite crazy seasonal rain managed to get out and see the great barrier reef - STUNNING!!! We also went up North to Cape Tribulation, but a flooded road - those damn seasonal rains again! But loads of laughs wer had along the way.
Then it was off to Airlie beach and a stunning 3 days sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands. Managed to spot crazy amounts of wild life. Saw Sharks chasing squids, which shot ink everywhere! Then dolphins patrolling the sharks! And then peacful mantarays doing there own thing! Did a few snorkeling trips on the reefs there as well and were very impressed. Spent some time on Whitehaven Beach - gourgeous. Met some fun people and had good times in the spa on board the boat with a big bunch of Irish folks and some Ozzie wine - or a "goon bag" as they call it!
Next stop Hervey Bay and from there
Flooded road
On the way to Cape Tribulation... well kind of anyway onto Frasier Island. The world's biggest sand dune Island. Stunning freshwater lakes on the Island, tropical rainforests and the longest beach highway in the world - 75 miles of uninteruppted beach! Stunning. Speed limit of 80km for the 4x4 on there!
Brisbane, back pounding the pavements with throngs of city dwellers. Stayed at a rather random B&B called Aunty Annies, little stuffed dolls all over the place! Spent some time at a Koala sanctuary, and yes got to get up close and personal with some kangaroos and managed to snuggle a kutie koala! Unfortunately no wombats were within Tom's reach much to his dismay. Cute little buggers though.
Byron bay was awesome, amazing beach, huge waves and Tom's red nose joined the party! 3 days of chilling and partying before we said hello to our good friend the Greyhound yet again.
Spent two days in Port Macquarie staying with an old family friend Brian Arton and Ady. Was lovely to be in a home and to stay with two South Africans. We left loaded up with 5 roses tea, rusks and marmite! Smiles all round.
Next stop Sydney and then its off to New Zealand!
