Aahhh.... woook at de widdle baby!
The BEST moment of my trip so far! What I wanted to see the most on this trip was a turtle. Boy did I get my wish! Moments after getting our kayak in the water a black turtle swam beside me!! The black turtles are only found in the river. If I am not mistaken we are too early to see any of the large ocean turtles.
Ok, I digress. ( I was just soooo excited about the turtle that I had to talk about that first or I couldn´t focus!)
So, our next daytrip after Cahuita was renting bikes and biking to Manzanillo. (well, that was the plan anyway.) When we were getting our bikes there was another couple geting bikes there too and I over heard them asking someone where a good place for breakfast was. Well, not being one able to keep anything to myself, I *politely* jumped into their conversation and told them that we were headed to breakfast to the best place in town and invited them to join us.
So, we all went to Bread and Chocolate together and then we went off biking. This couple was from Toronto and had to go back to San Jose to catch their
Bike ride to Manzanillo
Just for the record, we didn´t actually make it to Manzanillo. We stopped and did alot of things and I got tired so we turned around. flight that afternoon so they couldn´t stay long. We stopped at Punta Uva beach for awhile and watched a surf competition. We rode on for awhile more until we had to say bye to our new friends. Then Rod and I kept riding (along a mostly gravel rode I might add) until we got to the Butterfly Gardens. It was a perfect place to stop at 3 in the hot afternoon and get some shade. (perfect except for the steep uphill to get there.) After that we tried to keep going to Manzanillo, but it was a long day already and it gets dark here at 6, so I wanted to be back before then.
When we got back we took a quick cold shower(the only kind here) then we walked into town for our best dinner yet. It was dark at this point and the whole town was like one big market. We don´t know if it only happens on Saturday nights or every night since it was our first night to venture into town. It was so pretty though, there were paper bag lanterns all along the street, and soooo many people everywhere. Puerto Viejo is this
really relaxed Caribbean surf town, so you don´t usually see so much busy action.
I have to also mention that Rod had his first enjoyable shopping trip ever. You are allowed to wander the streets and into the shop carrying and drinking a beer. Rod thought that was pretty cool and that we should adopt that practice in Canada.
Alright, well the next day my bum hurt sooo much from the biking that I decided it was a hammock day. (not to mention I was a little slow going from drinking the bottle of wine that Rod bought the night before.) So, I found my hammock and I think I really was there for at least 6 hours.
We met a couple from Vancouver who invited us to go snorkeling with them the next day. (I know... we go to Costa Rica and all we meet are Canadians!) So, we spent all day trying to find a guide to take us out to the reef, but no luck. Which actually turned out to be good luck since we went kayaking instead. Not to mention it was cold and rainy the next day.
Soooooo..... back to kayaking.
Kayaking in Costa RIca
My kind of kayaking... me in the front....and Rod á paddling! Well, as I mentioned the first turtle sighting was pretty cool. Then a little ways down the river our (super hot) guide jumps out of his kayak and starts swimming toward a log. We hurry up to see what the heck he is doing and what he now has in his hands. It´s a baby turtle!!! Aaahhhhh can you imagine! It was soooooo cute. I was so happy that we couldn´t get a snorkeling guide. I didn´t think that we would even see a turtle on this trip much less hold a baby turtle! Ahh. That was the best. Hey, do you remember that time that I got to hold a baby turtle? Hahahhhaha!! Yippee for me!
Anyway, more kayaking, nice scenery, yada yada. When we finished we were offered the chance to go ocean kayaking. That´s right. In the ocean! So our guide points to Rod and I and says we´re going. Not one to say no (and they´ve already grabbed our double kayak and headed for the ocean) I follow along with the paddle. Well, the waves are ginormous!! Long story a bit shorter.... I get knocked on my ass and change my mind. Rod and the
Rod ocean kayaking
Rod is the one on the left. I tried to get a good shot of the waves so you guys could see how crazy he is. (in case you didn´t know!) guide each grab a single kayak and actually make it out past the waves. I stay behind with the rest of the group and play in the waves. Just as much fun, I think.
So, after that was done we had a quick shower and then grabbed the bus to San Jose. We stayed at Pangea just for the night, and who do we bump into just after checking in? Jessie and Tanya! Our new friends from Victoria. Crazy. Anyways, short version is I end up staying with them in their room and having a fun girls slumber party!! We parted ways the next day as they were heading home and we were off to La Fortuna to see some volcano action.
We´re here right now. The rain seems to have stopped for the moment, so hopefully we will actually be able to see the volcano. We´re going to find somewhere else to stay for the next couple of nights though. The best part of this place is the ample quick internet (hence the long blog!) and my first nice long hot shower.
Well, hope you guys are also doing well. You can thank Devyn for all
the pictures of me. It was her request. I´ll take lots more for you. Don´t worry!! Anyone heard from Amy?? Dev. you still at work? Baby still kicking lots? Crystal I had a dream about you the other night. You had your extensions in and your hair was a pretty light copper colour. That´s all I remember. Oh, and Masa ... Be Nice! Hahah! Miss you guys.
I´ll update again when I am at another fast internet. (whenever that may be)
Loves you all!!!

YAYYYYYY!!!!!!!
Monkeys, Turtles, poisonous spiders!! You guys seem like you are having such an amazing time. Great pictures. Your blog is deffinitely better than all those ones we were looking at. I have 3 days of work left but when I went in to cut Dana's hair I only had clients booked on friday so if I'm not booked I'll probably only work half a day on Saturday (so that everyone is there for my last day) and not work sunday. I'm having tons of contractions all the time and the baby's head is down about as far as it can go without coming right out - I could go early.
