I have been lazier than ever this week, reading, bumming around on the beach, eating, and attending crab racing. Glebe does that to you. After a few days of fairly stormy wet weather the sun returned in force today and I hit Coogee Beach with Casey, my American friend from the hostel, and two mates. Last night was valentines and the only way to take shelter from the deluge of love letters was of course to go crab racing at the Friend In Hand pub with Casey, Breeana, Mark and Ben. I bet $3 on a crab which I named Ludovich (a nod to Ludo in Labyrinth) but I didn't get to watch him in action becuse the bar staff took to spraying the crowd with soda water and I had to run for cover in the toilets, being absolutely drenched...when we rn outside to shelter a guy came after us with a large water gun. I saw the later races with other crabbies. Later two more guys joined us - we were a mixed bag of US, UK, Netherlands, France, Italian - and crashed a student party in the far too lavish student halls at UTS; I don't know what kind of student could afford to live there but we hit the roof garden where there was a DJ and cut a few shapes while watching over the Sydney skyline. Then we came back to our hostel and played a bit of guitar while making friends with a friendly possum on the fang.

Nothing too strenuous these days........ Coogee is pretty cool, not a very touristy or crowded beach, with great surf and some cool rock pool. Apparently a few years ago there was a sighting of the Virgin Mary.....

Most of tehe houses on the street are heritage listed and protected, dating way back to the earliest times of Australian white civilisation. They are very beautiful, almost Spanish style villas with decorative woden verandahs, peeling paintwork, some with stained glass, all with tons of character. According to a local, they can be worth upwards of AUD$1 million; the combination of their heritage plus the location and ambience of this part of town make them absolute gems.
