this is the campus from the top of the hill
Jan 11:
Today is Thursday- but I forgot to write about what I did yesterday so I’ll just stick it all together. (This may start happening more and more often I must say.) Anyway, yesterday we went on the tour of the University of Sussex Student Union……which we just call the USSU ( the best part is we pronounce it as a word….. sounds like “us” and “sue” except all one word) and by we I just mean me, Whitney, Alison, and Monica- not the whole campus, I don’t think. It was neat though to see all the different things that the university offers. There is an activities fair next week and that’s when we’ll learn about all the clubs, today we just saw the facilities. I really never knew that college kids could be as politically active as this campus is. There are all sorts of protests and campaigns going on here all the time……. nothing violent or disruptive or anything just a general push for change. The student board actually votes every year on the campaigns they are going to support that year…..this year it’s the environment, free education, and equality. It really is amazing the sort of drive that these kids have. While we were wandering around on the tour we passed some auditions going on and I thought it might be fun to try so I hung around for like 40 extra minutes and auditioned for a play. It was just for fun though- I sort of doubt that I’ll get in. Later on last night we went up to east slope for a little while and it turned out that one of the guys we had met through Monica’s friend on Tuesday was DJ-ing. So we listened to him for a bit. Wednesday was just a casual day. Today me and Whitney and Alison decided that we were going to try to climb up a hill on the back side of campus to see this estate that one of the other girls told us about. I think we might have picked the wrong hill but we never really walked far enough to find out. We jumped the first fence (on campus property- don’t worry) and Whitney fell in the mud……but it wasn’t a huge fall so we kept going. The hill was really steep and by the time we got to the top the wind was blowing so hard that if you were standing in mud you would start sliding. We realized that going back down the hill would probably put us in a position to be blown over entirely so we just took a few pictures and looked for another way down the hill. We found one and had an uneventful trip back down but the whole thing started out as an adventure. I think we’ll go look for the house again when it isn’t quite so windy and muddy. Later on we went over to Falmer Pub in the USSU to see what it was like and we met some other students that we might go into Brighton with tomorrow……which would be tons of fun.
